“Quyết định dỡ bỏ lệnh cấm không phụ thuộc vào nhân tố Trung Quốc hay các cân nhắc khác, mà nó dựa trên mong muốn của chúng tôi trong việc hoàn tấtnhững điểm kết nối trong tiến trình bình thường hóa quan hệ với Việt Nam”, ông Obama trả lời câu hỏi tại cuộc họp báo chung với Chủ tịch nước Trần Đại Quang sáng nay.

RENEW Deminer Dies From Injuries After Cluster Bomb Accident

This is the moment that I have feared for 15 years, since Project RENEW was launched in 2001.

Yesterday Ngo Thien Khiet was killed by a cluster munition at a field site in Quang Tri Province, near the former DMZ.  The 45-year-old deminer, a senior technician with eight years’ experience, was directing his team members in an area where several cluster bombs had been found and marked for destruction.

RENEW’s explosive ordnance disposal specialists and clearance technicians are highly trained, and professional.  Safety is their top priority.  Their efforts have resulted in the destruction of more than 30,000 bombs and other munitions over the years, without a single accident, injury, or death.

Until yesterday.

The RENEW staff, colleagues from Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA) and other NGOs, provincial officials and of course friends and family of Khiet are grieving this loss of a dear friend and colleague, a patriot who sacrificed his life in peacetime to dismantle the instruments of death left behind in wartime.

A cluster bomb explosion in Quang Tri Province has killed one deminer and injured another, both technical staff managed by Project RENEW and Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA).  The accident occurred on Wednesday, 18 May, in Co Luy Village of Hai Ba Commune, Hai Lang District.

An unusual meeting took place on Monday in the coastal city of Hai Phong in northern Vietnam between the son of a former U.S. prisoner of war (POW) and the Vietnamese prison warden who kept a watch on his father.

Former prison warden Senior Colonel Tran Trong Duyet welcomes Thomas Eugene Wilbur,whose father was a POW at the Hoa Lo Prison (known by Americans as the “Hanoi Hilton”).

45.000 m3 đất sân bay Đà Nẵng được tẩy sạch dioxin

Kết quả lấy mẫu xét nghiệm tại sân bay quốc tế Đà Nẵng do cơ quan Phát triển Quốc tế Mỹ (USAID) và Bộ Quốc phòng Việt Nam thực hiện cho thấy đất, bùn đã được tẩy sạch dioxin.

Ngày 3/5, Đại sứ Mỹ tại Việt Nam, ngài Ted Osius và Thứ trưởng Bộ Quốc phòng Việt Nam, Thượng tướng Nguyễn Chí Vịnh đã cùng công bố kết quả xử lý thành công đất nhiễm dioxin tại sân bay Đà Nẵng, trong khuôn khổ dự án được Bộ Quốc phòng Việt Nam và USAID quản lý. Phó Thủ tướng Vũ Đức Đam đã đến dự.

TTO – Nhiều người cho rằng sau vụ nổ kinh hoàng ở Hà Đông, dân kinh doanh phế liệu là vỏ bom mìn ở “chợ bom” xã Diễn Hồng, huyện Diễn Châu tỉnh Nghệ An đã biết sợ.

thanhniennews: The Ministry of Public Security has found traces of explosives and bomb debris at the site of a blast in Hanoi on Saturday that killed four people, injured 10 others and damaged more than 120 houses.

The explosion at about 3.10 p.m. at a scrap metal trading business seriously tore through 36 houses and damaged 95 others, and left a large crater in Van Phu residential area, Ha Dong District, the police said. Many vehicles along the street were damaged too.

Although the police was yet to officially pinpoint the cause of the blast, they speculated that it was ignited when the shop owner tried to cut open a bomb using a blow torch.

One of the perished victims was Pham Van Cuong, 42, who had rent the house for his scrap metal shop since 2013 and reportedly often used a blow torch to cut large scrap metal pieces, police said.

Project RENEW’s Prosthetics and Orthotics Mobile Outreach Program

According to a 2014 report compiled by Vietnam’s Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, Quang Tri province currently has 37,292 persons with disabilities, 13,023 of whom were disabled by Agent Orange and 5,094 by explosive remnants of war (ERW).1,2,3 Disabled persons living in rural areas often live in poverty and do not have access to basic services. 14 năm lăn lộn khắp vùng rừng rú của tỉnh Quảng Trị này, chúng tôi đã phát hiện và phá hủy hàng ngàn quả bom, quả đạn, mìn và các vật liệu chưa nổ” – chị Trần Thị Thảo, 39 tuổi, đội trưởng đội 1 của dự án MAG Quảng Trị (viết tắt của Mines Advisory Group – nhóm cố vấn bom mìn do Vương quốc Anh tài trợ), nói.

LM – The main objective of Project RENEW’s Mine Risk Education is the risk of ERW accidents among chilren and adults is reduced and eventually eliminated through education, information, and public awareness in support of EOD quick response.

World War I and World War II-era bombs are still found by the thousands in European countries, even today. According to Spiegel Online, in Germany alone, more than 2,000 tons of aerial bombs and all sorts of munitions ranging from hand grenades and tank mines to artillery shells are recovered each year.  So it is impossible – and not necessary –  to clean up every bomb and mine in Vietnam.  The real goal must be to make Quang Tri safe ­– which means placing priority on removing cluster bombs, grenades, mortar and artillery rounds, and other small ordnance on the ground or just under the surface – the main items that kill and injure children, farmers, and other adults. Fifty years ago today, November 2, 2015, at about 5:20 p.m., a 31-year-old Quaker named Norman Morrison immolated himself 40 feet from the window of US Secretary of War Robert McNamara’s office at the Pentagon. I was a law student in Washington, DC at the time.

Most US Americans know little of our nation’s history and seldom reflect on the moral issues relating to its genocidal origins and imperial nature. And, it seems, they avoid at all costs reflection on anything that may produce “negative” feelings (i.e., the truth). UNDP – Hà Nội, ngày 19 tháng 3 năm 2015 – 170,000 người dân sống ở khu vực gần sân bay Biên Hòa ở miền Nam và các vùng lân cận của căn cứ không quân Phù Cát ở miền Trung sẽ không còn phải đối mặt với nguy cơ bị phơi nhiễm dioxin.

Văn phòng Ban Chỉ đạo Quốc gia (Văn phòng 33) và Chương trình Phát triển Liên Hợp Quốc (UNDP) đã công bố kết quả này trong hội nghị tổng kết dự án tại Hà Nội vào ngày 19 tháng 3 năm 2015. Hai Lang District, Quang Tri Province – 30 October 2015

The O Lau River flows through Hai Lang District in Quang Tri Province.  Along its banks is historic Luong Dien Village, one of the oldest villages in the province. In 1508, people migrating from Tonkin settled in this area and founded a small village named Ke Lang.  Called Luong Phuc in the 18th century, the village was chosen by the Nguyen Lords as the location to be their headquarters and army base for their conquest of the south. Luong Phuc was again renamed as Luong Dien in 1804; two years after Emperor Gia Long – the first king of the Nguyen Dynasty – ascended the throne.
