Viet Nam News HÀ NỘI — Many transport projects in southern localities have been delayed due to the scarcity and surging price of construction sand, Giao Thông (Transport) newspaper reported.

For instance, a contractor of the Bến Lức-Long Thành Highway said that only half of the road foundation had been built; some 80,000 cubic metres of sand are missing to complete the project’s foundation.

A company has been exploiting a large amount of sand without a legitimate permit, against the backdrop of the increasingly concerning threat of sand mining across Vietnam.

Residents of Huong An Commune, Que Son District, Quang Nam Province have been complaining about hundreds of cubic meters of sand being mined on a daily basis and sold to other regions in Vietnam.

KON TUM — Xuan Tai Company in the Highland province of Kon Tum was fined VND40 million ($1,769) for illegal sand exploitation, said Chief Inspector of the Department of Environment and Natural Resource Tran Cong Hau yesterday.

According to the department, the company was fined VND8 million for encroaching the Dak Bla River and VND32 million for illegally mining 3,507m3 of sand over an eight-month period.

A huge amount of sand dredged in two river projects originally meant for protecting an eroding beach in the central Vietnamese province of Quang Nam has been directed away from its expected location.

In early 2017, the Quang Nam administration approved two dredging projects on Cua Dai River in the province’s Hoi An City, with the exploited sand meant to be used as an aid against erosion at the nearby Cua Dai beach.

The chairman of the People’s Committee in the northern Vietnamese province of Quang Ninh has been the victim of threats since launching a campaign to end harmful sand exploitation in a local river.

Nguyen Tu Quynh, chairman of the provincial administration, has sent a letter notifying the prime minister that he and other officers had been threatened for ending a sand dredging project in the Cau River, an 83 kilometer long waterway snaking through Bac Ninh and Bac Giang Provinces.
