HANOI — Vietnam plans to freeze approval for new entries to the airline industry until 2022, a move that threatens to solidify the virtual duopoly already in place.

The chilled business climate caused by the novel coronavirus makes supporting existing airlines the top priority, Transport Minister Nguyen Van The said.

Currently five commercial airlines operate within Vietnam, but two top players dominate the market. With Australia’s Qantas Airways offloading its 30% stake in Jetstar Pacific, a joint venture with Vietnam Airlines, the state’s move to block additional competition has raised concerns about higher ticket prices. HCMC bus service fails to attract more passengers despite increased subsidy

Losing out to ride hailing operators and social distancing, amongst others, HCMC bus services are struggling to reroute impacts of low demand.

Ho Chi Minh City’s Transport Department recently asked the city for a public bus subsidy of VND1.31 trillion ($56.8 million) this year, up 14 percent from an earlier estimate.

The reason cited for the increase is low demand during and after the social distancing period. Resumption of services has only reached 80 percent of the target and companies say they need to pay staff and service their debts during the social distancing period despite revenues plummeting.

Without the increase in subsidies, the department said it might have to cut 15 percent of bus trips in the last six months of the year.

Work begins on first resettlement area for Long Thanh Airport

Work began Monday on a 280 hectare resettlement area for the Long Thanh International Airport project, with residents set to receive their land lots in August.

The Loc An – Binh Son resettlement area, located in the southern province of Dong Nai, where the new airport is to be built, consists of over 5,000 land lots for 29,000 residents.

Dong Nai authorities will build roads, utilities, schools, markets, community centers and religious facilities before handling the land lots to residents to construct their own houses.

The first 700 households are set to receive their land lots in August.

This is the first of two resettlement areas that will be built for residents affected by the Long Thanh Airport project.

Why Vietnam Needs Six Airlines

Vietnam already supports five operating commercial airlines and a sixth is on the way. That’s because so many of the country’s newly minted middle class is literally going places.

Vietnam’s civil aviation authority estimates air passenger traffic will reach 131 million by 2020 following average growth of 16% last year and this year. By 2030, the authority expects 280 million civilian air trips per year.

The Hanoitimes – A Swedish state-owned entity proposed a commercial loan of over US$1 billion for the construction of Long Thanh airport, the would-be largest of its kind in Vietnam.

Vietnam is considering Sweden’s loans to build Long Thanh International Airport and develop the air traffic control activities, according to Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Vu Dai Thang.

The Hanoitimes – The total investment capital of the project is estimated at VND100 trillion (US$4.3 billion).

The Chinese government has provided non-refundable aid for Vietnam worth over VND32 billion (US$1.37 million) to conduct a survey and a master plan for the Lao Cai – Hai Phong – Hanoi railway project connecting with China, according to the Ministry of Transport (MoT).

That is surely a good way to get money from men with hormone at the level of teenager. It embarrasses both Vietnamese women and men. And looks like the driving force behind all this is a woman too. Is she a real woman, or a sick male chauvinist in disguise? Or she is simply sick by obsession with money making? Wow, money, mony, money! Such a great driving force of human psyche!

Da Nang dismissed environmental concerns to build a new port

Vietnam’s central city Da Nang has dismissed environmental concerns raised by a Singaporean consultant and is pushing ahead with plans to build a new port.

At a meeting with voters on Tuesday, city Chairman Huynh Duc Tho confirmed that the Lien Chieu Port would be built in Da Nang Bay.

The 220-hectare, VND32.86 trillion ($1.42 billion) port, expected to spearhead Da Nang’s logistics development, will be built below Hai Van Pass in central Vietnam.

Lien Chieu will function as a gateway for cargo while Tien Sa, currently the only port in the city, will become a tourism port.

A VND6.7 trillion ($289.6 million) expansion project to upgrade the Phap Van-Cau Gie expressway, the southern gateway to Hanoi, from four to six lanes was completed late last year and put into operation earlier this year.

The Phap Van-Cau Gie Expressway, which first opened in 2002, runs more than 32 kilometers (20 miles) to the south of Hanoi and links up with another expressway to the nearby Ninh Binh Province. The six-lane expressway is expected to cater to 60,000 vehicles per day and daily revenue from toll fees is estimated at more than VND2 billion ($86,400). Long Thanh International Airport in the southern Dong Nai Province will have an annual capacity of 25 million passengers when built in 2025.
