Authorities in Bangkok have banned street food from the capital’s major roads, causing an outcry in a city famous for its affordable roadside cuisine.

Already famous for its incredible network of underground tunnels, Củ Chi is using its rustic ambience to attract more visitors keen to get away from urban bustle, Sơn Hà finds.
Arguably, no visitor to HCM City, or Việt Nam, even, will miss a trip to the Guerilla Warfare Tunnels.
They are a dark reminder of dark days, and a fantastic reminder of incredible bravery, ingenuity and indomitable spirit.
The underground network of tunnels that will never cease to amaze, with its sheer length and facilities like trenches, docks, dining spaces, bedrooms and warehouses, has come out of hiding to become a living museum of the Resistance.
The earliest tunnel appeared in 1948 in two communes of Tân Phú Trung and Phước Vĩnh An. At first, there were just short and simple complexes for hiding documents, weapons and some guerillas.
Later, more tunnels were dug and wound their way to neighbouring communes. Between 1961 and 1965, six communes in the north of Củ Chi had completed the “backbone” tunnel. Branch tunnels connected with the backbone to form a network that could be expanded, if needed. They were needed. The Củ Chi Tunnels expanded rapidly, especially in the beginning of 1966, as the fight against American intensified.

By 1967, the tunnel system had a total length of 250 kilometres, a man-made wonder.
The “iron land” of guerilla forces has now transformed itself, from an area most devastated by war in the southern region into a popular tourist destination and now, a “new rural area”.

Ho Chi Minh City leaders met with local tourism companies on Thursday to discuss ways to meet a target of welcoming seven million international visitors this year.
The southern tourism hub received 5.2 million foreign holidaymakers in 2016 and experienced a 15 percent jump in tourist numbers during Q1 2017, though experts are still unsure the city will meet such a lofty goal.
In the Jan-Mar period, more than 1.5 million international visitors spent holidays in Ho Chi Minh City, but Bui Ta Hoang Vu, director of the municipal tourism department, said the quarterly growth must be more than 20 percent for the seven-million target to be met. A market for street vendors has been put into operation for over one year at Pham Van Hai Market in HCMC’s Tan Binh District.
Some 20 households have been approved by local authorities to run business at the market at night time, which helps reduce encroachment on public pavements by street vendors.
It is expected that more spaces will be set up at other districts in HCMC to help street vendors run business.

Editor’s note: Quang Kiet, a frequent visitor to Phu Quoc, has found many ‘negatives,’ one of which is the mushrooming number of resorts on the ‘pearl island’ just off southern Vietnam.

Parliament was adjourned after the Tourism Tax Bill 2017 that was tabled by Tourism and Culture Minister Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz was passed with a big majority.
When winding up the debate for the bill, Mohamed Nazri said revenue from Tourism Tax would be in the region of RM654.62 million if the overall occupancy rate for the 11 million ‘room night’ in the country can achieve 60 per cent.
