Tourism plans in Mekong Delta called too ambitious

Last update 12:00 | 29/06/2017
VietNamNet Bridge – The Mekong Delta expects 34 million travelers by 2020, but the goal is out of reach if local tourism continues to operate in the traditional way.

Thirteen provinces and cities in Mekong Delta received 7.6 million travelers in 2016, including 900,000 foreign travelers, or 10 percent of total foreign travelers to Vietnam.

Under the plan for Mekong Delta tourism development, the region would have turnover of VND25 trillion by 2020, or VND15.3 trillion higher than last year’s turnover.

With the overlap in tourism products, poor infrastructure and services, and bad marketing, Mekong Delta tourism agencies should not set a high target in the number of travelers.

Some experts commented the plan is too ambitious, because the number of travelers to Mekong Delta has not increased sharply like other regions. A taste of Cambodia in Saigon

Last update 09:00 | 27/06/2017

Its official name is Le Hong Phong Market, but for decades people have been calling this market in HCM City’s District 10 “Cambodian Market” simply because it sells certain products from Cambodia.

Cambodian Market has expanded with locals getting in on the act, but its true Cambodian soul is still preserved by around 15 stores run by the children and grandchildren of the families that fled Cambodia more than 40 years ago.

After turning into alley 374/51 on Le Hong Phong Street, it is easy to find the market since Cambodian colours can be seen all over the place.

The market dates back to the 1970s when Vietnamese-Cambodians were forced to flee Cambodia due to civil war. They returned to Viet Nam and set up the market together, according to a vendor named Tu Xe.

These days, Cambodian Market has expanded with locals getting in on the act, but its true Cambodian soul is still preserved by around 15 stores run by the children and grandchildren of the families that fled Cambodia more than 40 years ago.

Will Bangkok’s street food ban hold?

The Thai capital is famous for its street food – but now the authorities are seeking to strictly curtail it. Nic Dunlop wonders why

Bangkok, one of the world’s foodie capitals, caters to almost every taste, whether fine French cuisine or fresh sushi. But for tourists and locals alike, it is Thai street food that really makes the city such a culinary delight.

Dishes from all over the country are available at every hour of the day. They include som tam, a spicy green papaya salad from the northeast, and muu bing, strips of grilled pork on sticks. There are also the popular lad kao (on rice) varieties, which are stir-fried dishes like krapao moo saap – minced pork fried in garlic, fish sauce, chilli and Thai basil. The food originates from different parts of the country, making the capital’s streets reflect the kingdom as a whole.

In April this year, the authorities announced they would purge the city of street food, in the interests of “cleanliness, safety and order”. The next area to be cleared would be Bangkok’s Chinatown and the backpacker ghetto of Khao San Road. There would be no exceptions said Wanlop Suwandee, chief adviser to the governor. “Every street vendor will have to move out.”

The announcement was met with incredulity. The authorities were quick to back-pedal, claiming they were not banning street food entirely, but regulating it. Special areas would be set up for vendors, they announced, but far from the centre. The tourist areas of Chinatown and Khao San would be spared. Tiếp tục đọc “Will Bangkok’s street food ban hold?”
