It’s only natural that Beijing might show an interest in a tourism development that aims to lure big-spending Chinese tourists to the shores of Cambodia with the promise of casinos, golf courses and luxury resorts.

China’s Most Destructive Boats Return to the South China Sea
After a sharp drop-off in activity from 2016 to late 2018, Chinese clam harvesting fleets have returned to the South China Sea in force over the last six months. These fleets, which typically include dozens of small fishing vessels accompanied by a handful of larger “motherships,” destroy vast swaths of coral reef in order to extract endangered giant clams. The clam shells are transported back to Hainan Province where they fetch thousands of dollars each in a thriving market for jewelry and statuary. Since late 2018, satellite imagery has shown these fleets operating frequently at Scarborough Shoal and throughout the Paracels, including at Bombay Reef. Hãng Reuters đưa tin, hai tàu khu trục mang tên lửa dẫn đường của Mỹ ngày 6/5 đã thực hiện chiến dịch bảo đảm tự do hàng hải trên biển Đông.

Theo đó, hai khu trục hạm USS Preble và USS Chung Hoon của hải quân Mỹ đã lưu thông vào khu vực 12 hải lý quanh Đá Gạc Ma và Đá Ga Ven, thuộc quần đảo Trường Sa của Việt Nam, hiện bị Trung Quốc chiếm đóng và cải tạo trái phép.

The US Navy is planning two major visits to Vietnam this year as part of efforts to strengthen maritime relations between the two armies.

The US “would welcome the opportunity for another aircraft carrier visit to Vietnam this year,” saying that the move shows the mutual respect that each nation has for each other and the depth of the two countries’ growing partnership, Commander of US Indo-Pacific Command Admiral Philip Davidson said at a press meeting in Ho Chi Minh City on April 18, VnExpress reported. Since early March, Chinese fishing vessels—apparently part of the country’s maritime militia force—have been operating near two Philippine-held features in the disputed Spratly Islands: Loaita Island and Loaita Cay, called Kota and Panata Islands by Filipinos. The Philippine press began to report this militia presence in early April, prompting the government to say it would protest to Beijing. This comes as tensions between the two sides are running high over the presence of a larger Chinese flotilla deployed since December 2018 near Philippine-occupied Thitu Island. Over the last several weeks, Philippine officials have issued diplomatic protests and public recriminations against Beijing over that deployment, which appears aimed at dissuading Manila from continuing modest infrastructure upgrades on Thitu. Vietnam continues to quietly upgrade its facilities in the Spratly Islands, though apparently without facing the same reaction from China’s maritime militia forces as the Philippines recently has. Vietnam occupies 49 outposts spread across 27 features in the vicinity of the Spratly Islands. Of those 27 features, only 10 can be called islets while the rest are mostly underwater reefs and banks.

Spratly Island is the largest of Vietnam’s outposts and the administrative center of its presence in the area. In 2015-16, Vietnam undertook an expansion of the island to extend its small runway and create a protected harbor. In total, Hanoi created about 40 acres of new land at Spratly Island through a process that involved the use of construction equipment to dredge up part of the reef surrounding the island and cover it in sand. This process was more time-consuming and less environmentally disastrous than the methods used for China’s industrial-scale dredging and landfill at its facilities in the Spratlys, but still involved the intentional destruction of coral reef. HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam has once again demanded China respect its sovereignty over the Hoàng Sa (Paracel) and Trường Sa (Spratly) archipelagoes in response to China’s live-fire drills and construction plans in Hoàng Sa.

Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Lê Thị Thu Hằng made the statement on Thursday at a press conference.

In August 2018, the HMS Albion sailed through the Paracel Islands to assert freedom of navigation and challenge China’s claim to straight baselines around the island group. The United Kingdom’s challenge was the first operation by a non-U.S. vessel in the South China Sea that was analogous to the United States’ now well-publicized freedom of navigation operations (FONOPs). Three months later, the USS Chancellorsville undertook an identical challenge to Beijing’s baselines around the Paracels. 47 năm cơ duyên với đảo Hai Trụ

Năm 1971, lão ngư Phạm Tòa đã kể với chàng ngư dân trẻ Trần Đồng về những năm tháng bị Pháp bắt đưa ra đảo Hoàng Sa. Ông Tòa nói cứ ra đảo Hai Trụ thì sẽ thừa sức làm giàu.

Mãi đến 18 năm sau, người thanh niên này giống như người mang túi 3 gang vào kho vàng là đảo Hai Trụ. Anh nhanh chóng trở thành ngư dân giàu có ở làng chài Định Tân (xã Bình Châu huyện Bình Sơn tỉnh Quảng Ngãi).

Ngóng chồng ở Hoàng Sa

Cả làng chài Châu Thuận Biển (xã Bình Châu, huyện Bình Sơn, tỉnh Quảng Ngãi) đang mong chờ sự trở về của cha con ngư dân Nguyễn Minh Hùng và các thuyền viên quê ở huyện Núi Thành, tỉnh Quảng Nam. Tàu QNg 90819 TS bị tàu Trung Quốc đâm chìm ở Hoàng Sa vào ngày 6/3. Trong khi vụ việc một tàu QNg 90559 TS bị đâm chìm vào năm 2015 vẫn chưa nguôi nỗi đau.

Khát tiếng… chồng

Chị Trương Thị Hoa là vợ thuyền trưởng Nguyễn Minh Hùng. Chiếc tàu QNg 90819TS chở theo chồng chị và người con trai là Nguyễn Minh Lên, 19 tuổi đi Hoàng Sa rồi gặp nạn. Chị vẫn nhớ như in, cả 2 cha con đã nói văng vẳng trong máy thông tin là “hai cha con tui còn sống, tàu bị Trung Quốc đâm chìm, giờ sắp lút mũi rồi, của mất, người còn…”.
