I am an attorney in the Washington DC area, with a Doctor of Law in the US, attended the master program at the National School of Administration of Việt Nam, and graduated from Sài Gòn University Law School. I aso studied philosophy at the School of Letters in Sài Gòn. . I have worked as an anti-trust attorney for Federal Trade Commission and a litigator for a fortune-100 telecom company in Washington DC. I have taught law courses for legal professionals in Việt Nam and still counsel VN government agencies on legal matters. I have founded and managed businesses for me and my family, both law and non-law. I have published many articles on national newspapers and radio stations in Việt Nam. In 1989 I was one of the founding members of US-VN Trade Council, working to re-establish US-VN relationship. Since the early 90's, I have established and managed VNFORUM and VNBIZ forum on VN-related matters; these forums are the subject of a PhD thesis by Dr. Caroline Valverde at UC-Berkeley and her book Transnationalizing Viet Nam. I translate poetry and my translation of "A Request at Đồng Lộc Cemetery" is now engraved on a stone memorial at Đồng Lộc National Shrine in VN. I study and teach the Bible and Buddhism. In 2009 I founded and still manage dotchuoinon.com on positive thinking and two other blogs on Buddhism. In 2015 a group of friends and I founded website CVD - Conversations on Vietnam Development (cvdvn.net). I study the art of leadership with many friends who are religious, business and government leaders from many countries. I have written these books, published by Phu Nu Publishing House in Hanoi: "Positive Thinking to Change Your Life", in Vietnamese (TƯ DUY TÍCH CỰC Thay Đổi Cuộc Sống) (Oct. 2011) "10 Core Values for Success" (10 Giá trị cốt lõi của thành công) (Dec. 2013) "Live a Life Worth Living" (Sống Một Cuộc Đời Đáng Sống) (Oct. 2023) I practice Jiu Jitsu and Tai Chi for health, and play guitar as a hobby, usually accompanying my wife Trần Lê Túy Phượng, aka singer Linh Phượng.

HA NOI — About 21 of the 38 projects to upgrade National Highway No 1 from the central Thanh Hoa Province to the southern Can Tho Province have been completed in 18 months.

Head of the Transport Engineering Construction and Quality Management Bureau Tran Xuan Sanh said this at a meeting with the transport ministry for reviewing the progress of the National Highway No 1 upgrade project on Thursday.

Vietnam has reached the millennium development goals (MDGs) set by the United Nations, including those related to poverty reduction, and is working hard to achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs), the Vietnamese legislature’s leader has said.

The U.S. and Malaysia have been secretly discussing expanded use of Malaysian territory for hosting U.S. spy planes to patrol the South China Sea, in response to increased Chinese activity in the disputed territory.

Following a series of incursions into Malaysian waters by Chinese vessels in recent months, talks between the U.S. government and the office of Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak have intensified, two senior U.S. defense officials said. The U.S. side has been pressing Najib’s government to allow the U.S. Navy to fly both P-8 Poseidon and P-3 Orion maritime surveillance planes from Malaysian airstrips over South China Sea areas where the Chinese government has been rapidly building artificial islands. Hospital fined VND1.4 billion for environmental law violations

HA NOI  (VNS)— Le Ngoc Tung Hospital in southern Tay Ninh Province has been fined VND1.4 billion (US$62,000) for illegally burying untreated medical waste in a local district.The decision was issued by the People’s Committee of the province, which also ordered the seizure of two vans used by the hospital to transport the medical waste for illegal burial.

Earlier in June, two security guards of the hospital were caught red-handed by the police, when they were burying three packages of medical waste weighing more than 100kg in Chau Thanh District’s Thanh Binh Village.

The police said the packages contained used gloves, needles, bandages and other items.

The two guards admitted they had been burying untreated medical waste there and in some other parts of the province since January 2014.

Local police dug up some 60 tonnes of untreated medical waste buried by the hospital.—VNS

Ten U.S. Marines and soldiers are in the Australian Outback for Kowari 15, a trilateral exercise with Chinese and Australian forces that focuses on survival in harsh environments.

Kowari, which runs through Sept. 12 and first took place last year, provides participants with an understanding of the basic principles, procedures, techniques and equipment to survive severe conditions, the Australian army said in a statement.

Retail gasoline prices in Vietnam have been cut by around 6.5 percent on Thursday, the seventh reduction this year and the fifth since June, as global oil prices continue to decline.
The most popular grade RON-92 now sells at VND17,338 (76 US cents) per liter, while biofuel alternative E5 is priced at VND16,843 (73 cents) per liter, according to an announcement released by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, and the Ministry of Finance.
The retail prices of diesel oil and kerosene are lowered by less than 1 percent to VND13,310 (58 cents) and VND12,286 (53 cents) respectively.
In their statement, the ministries said the latest adjustment was because the global fuel prices declined “quite sharply” over the past two weeks.
They said RON-92’s price decreased by 9.6 percent to sell at $56.414 per barrel, while diesel and kerosene saw a reduction of $0.5-2 per barrel.
Vietnamese authorities have adjusted retail fuel prices for 11 times this year, including four hikes.

Viet Nam should be proud of its record in promoting economic growth and poverty reduction, United Nations resident co-ordinator Pratibha Mehta told Viet Nam News Agency.

On September 2, 1945, in the Declaration of Independence to establish the Democratic Republic of Viet Nam, President Ho Chi Minh quoted the US Declaration of Independence saying: “All men are created equally. August 2015—When Hieu Trinh Thi married five years ago, she knew that her husband Truong might be HIV positive since he had been an intravenous drug user in the past. In Hai Phong, Vietnam, where the couple lives, 44 percent of people who inject drugs are infected with the virus.

Hieu knew too that she was at risk of contracting HIV from Truong, if she hadn’t already. But the abstract idea of the virus didn’t outweigh her love for the motorbike taxi driver, and the couple wed in the fall of 2010.
