Vietnam World’s Fifth Happiest Country, For Now

JUL 25, 2016  Brett Davis  CONTRIBUTOR

Opinions expressed by Forbes Contributors are their own.

Vietnam has been ranked the fifth happiest country in the world
in a study by the UK think tank the New Economics Foundation.

The Happy Planet Index report measured elements that contribute towards a happy life in 140 countries and looked at factors such as life expectancy, wellbeing, inequality and ecological footprint. The list was topped by Costa Rica, followed by Mexico, Columbia and Vanuatu, making Vietnam the happiest country in Asia.

Life expectancy in Vietnam is a healthy 75.5 years, not bad at all for a developing nation. By way of comparison, life expectancy in the US is 78.8 years (overall the US ranked as the 108th happiest country).

Wellbeing measure how people view their quality of life, while inequality looked at how unequal the distribution of life expectance and experienced wellbeing results were within a country. Vietnam’s score in the latter category was actually better than Costa Rica’s, and was attributed in large part to the strong provision of public services such as education. School enrolments in Vietnam, at 98 percent, are among the highest in the world. Tiếp tục đọc “Vietnam World’s Fifth Happiest Country, For Now”

Insecurity in China’s far Western province of Xinjiang throws up obstacles for Xi’s signature “One Belt, One Road” initiative

On Tuesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping visited a mosque in China’s western Ningxia province. The leader of the officially atheist Chinese Communist Party (CCP) praised the local Muslim community’s rich cultural contribution and efforts alleviating poverty. “Religions in our country, the endemic ones and those from abroad, have become deeply embedded in the Chinese civilization, whose history covers more than 5,000 years,” Xi said in Ningxia’s capital Yinchuan, reports the state-backed China Daily newspaper. Cambodia should be cautious when it comes to Chinese aid

9 July 2016

Author: Veasna Var, UNSW Canberra

eastasiaforum: In a 2006 speech, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen praised China, saying that ‘China talks less but does a lot’. China is certainly doing a lot in Cambodia, becoming the country’s largest aid donor and source of foreign investment. Between 1994 and 2013, Chinese investment in Cambodia was about US$10 billion, focused mainly on agriculture, mining, infrastructure projects, hydro-power dams and garment production. Since 1992, China has also provided around US$3 billion in concessional loans and grants to Cambodia. Tiếp tục đọc “Cambodia should be cautious when it comes to Chinese aid”

South China Sea: Beijing considers next moves after Hague ruling

CNBC

Wednesday, 13 Jul 2016 | 9:59 AM ET

An international tribunal sent a pointed message to China on Tuesday — just because you say something is yours doesn’t mean it is.

This week’s binding decision from the Permanent Court of Arbitration at The Hague, Netherlands, dealt a serious blow to China’s claim to most of the South China Sea, a 1.4 million-square-mile body of water that contains the world’s busiest shipping lanes. The ruling was rejected immediately by the Chinese Foreign Ministry — as expected — but it has left Beijing in an exceedingly difficult position where it has to balance an angry, nationalistic population against an international community that expects it to back down.
