HÀ NỘI – Leaders of six provinces on Tuesday sat down with relevant ministers to talk about the construction of a coastal highway route, the detailed plan for which was approved back in 2010.

The 550-kilometre highway will traverse the northern port city of Hải Phòng, Quảng Ninh, Thái Bình, Nam Định, Ninh Bình and Thanh Hóa provinces.

Minister of Planning and Investment, Nguyễn Chí Dũng, said that without such a route, the six cities won’t be able to connect, wasting potential development opportunities.

Dũng said the ministry had received investment plans from all six provinces, but each differs on the scale, direction, mechanism and resources for the route. Meanwhile, it was necessary to unify the direction, scale and importance of connecting with each other to promote effectiveness, he said. Tiếp tục đọc “Provinces agree on coastal road”

Child abuse: When silence becomes criminal

vietnam news

Update: March, 16/2017 – 09:00

I cannot breathe. (So forgive the shrillness of this piece)

Suffocating doesn’t begin to describe the way my heart constricts these days as news about sexual abuse of children breaks out, one after another.

And as heartbreaking as the cases are, the brain explodes in the deafening silence from those we believe are there to uphold the law, protect our children.

A 13-year-old girl in Cà Mau Province and her family reported to local police that she was abused by a neighbour eight times and petitioned that the perpetrator be taken to court. The answer they got from the police last November was a decision not to investigate further because “there was not enough evidence”.

Last month, on February 10, the girl killed herself. Tiếp tục đọc “Child abuse: When silence becomes criminal”

The economic and environmental cost of pollution will drive Beijing’s policies regardless of what Donald Trump does

Twenty years ago, climate change was believed by many in Beijing to be a conspiracy cooked up by the western world to contain China’s development.

Since then, China has performed an about-turn, not only recognising climate change as a major global challenge but also, ahead of Davos this week, vowing to lead the world’s effort in combating it.

The election of Donald Trump, who, labelling climate change a “hoax” created by China, has reversed the conspiracy, casts a dark shadow on the prospect of future international climate cooperation. But for China, now could be a moment of opportunity. Tiếp tục đọc “China eyes an opportunity to take ownership of climate change fight”

Vietnam labels Taiwan drills on disputed island ‘serious violation’

China claims most of the energy-rich waters through which about US$5 trillion in ship-borne trade passes every year. Neighbours Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam also have claims.

Taiwan’s claim to Itu Aba is complicated by the fact that China considers Taiwan sovereign territory. Taiwan and China both claim the South China Sea using old maps that date back to the late 1940s when the Nationalists ruled China. A survey conducted of 18 universities in Vietnam found that first-year students can get 220-245 score out of 990 TOEIC scores. This means that students would need 360 teaching hours more, or 480 periods to obtain 450-500 TOEIC score, the minimum score candidates need to be shortlisted by employers.
