Corrupt traffic inspectors in Can Tho spend ‘protection fee’ on job promotion

A group of former traffic inspectors in Can Tho City in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region previously arrested for demanding ‘protection money’ from local businesses claim the cash was used to ‘buy’ promotions.

At a trial held for seven of the corrupt traffic inspectors at the municipal People’s Court on Thursday, some of the defendants admitted that the extortion money was used to pay for job promotions.

Shipbuilders flout contracts in fishing boat scandal in central Vietnam: inspectors

Two shipbuilders responsible for 18 fishing boats which suffered damage shortly after delivery were found to have violated the technical specifications listed in their contracts with fishermen in the south-central province of Binh Dinh, inspectors said Thursday.

The steel-clad vessels, ranging from VND12 billion (US$528,634) to VND20 billion ($881,057) in value, were delivered to Binh Dinh fishermen in September 2016.

Thirteen of the vessels were built by Nam Trieu Co., run by the Ministry of Public Security, while the remaining boats were built by Dai Nguyen Duong Co.

THANH HOÁ — Several illegal sand exploitation vessels have been found operating along Chu River in the central province of Thanh Hoá.However, local authorised agencies are finding it difficult to deter vessels owing to inadequate and weak human resources.As a result, banks along the river have suffered serious erosion, narrowing the cultivable area of residents and threatening people’s safety.

Three arrested for eight dialysis deaths

HÒA BÌNH — Police in Hòa Bình Province have arrested three people suspected to be responsible for the deaths of eight patients who underwent kidney dialysis treatment at a local hospital in May.

They are Bùi Mạnh Quốc, Trần Văn Sơn and Hoàng Công Lương.
