I am an attorney in the Washington DC area, with a Doctor of Law in the US, attended the master program at the National School of Administration of Việt Nam, and graduated from Sài Gòn University Law School. I aso studied philosophy at the School of Letters in Sài Gòn. . I have worked as an anti-trust attorney for Federal Trade Commission and a litigator for a fortune-100 telecom company in Washington DC. I have taught law courses for legal professionals in Việt Nam and still counsel VN government agencies on legal matters. I have founded and managed businesses for me and my family, both law and non-law. I have published many articles on national newspapers and radio stations in Việt Nam. In 1989 I was one of the founding members of US-VN Trade Council, working to re-establish US-VN relationship. Since the early 90's, I have established and managed VNFORUM and VNBIZ forum on VN-related matters; these forums are the subject of a PhD thesis by Dr. Caroline Valverde at UC-Berkeley and her book Transnationalizing Viet Nam. I translate poetry and my translation of "A Request at Đồng Lộc Cemetery" is now engraved on a stone memorial at Đồng Lộc National Shrine in VN. I study and teach the Bible and Buddhism. In 2009 I founded and still manage dotchuoinon.com on positive thinking and two other blogs on Buddhism. In 2015 a group of friends and I founded website CVD - Conversations on Vietnam Development (cvdvn.net). I study the art of leadership with many friends who are religious, business and government leaders from many countries. In May when the sound of cicadas signals the advent of summer, giant purple crape-myrtle flowers (known as bang lang) bloom in many streets of Hanoi.

Despite blooming for a short time, the bright purple of this kind of flower brings a poetic beauty to the capital in the early summer days.

Situé à mi-chemin entre les provinces de Son La et de Diên Biên, le col de Pha Din fait partie des sites incontournables du Nord-Ouest. Si le panorama est époustouflant, Pha Din est surtout associée à la victoire de Diên Biên Phu. Il y a 65 ans, les troupes vietnamiennes et les jeunes volontaires empruntaient ce col pour ravitailler en nourritures et en munitions le front de Diên Biên Phu.

Nguyên Van Ky habite la ville de Son La. Ses jeunes années passées à Pha Din sont à jamais gravées dans la mémoire de cet ancien jeune volontaire, aujourd’hui âgé de 84 ans. En mars 1954, Nguyên Van Ky avait 19 ans et il commandait alors l’escadron 294 chargé de combler les trous immenses causés par les bombes. Il se souvient de la côte Mèo, l’un des lacets les plus dangereux et les plus bombardés par l’armée française. Un jour, raconte t-il, un obus est tombé et le passage des véhicules est devenu impossible. Pas question pourtant de laisser la route en l’état car le convoi de ravitaillement dirigé par le colonel Dinh Duc Thiên devait emprunter ce chemin. Le jeune Ky et  les douze membres de son unité ont tenté alors pendant des jours et des nuits de combler cet immense cratère; en vain. Hải Lăng, Quảng Trị (9/5/2019) – Bốn nhà lãnh đạo của cộng đồng quốc tế ở Việt Nam, các nữ đại sứ của Thụy Sĩ, Na Uy, Canada, và New Zealand (được biết đến là Nhóm G4) tại Việt Nam, hôm thứ Năm đến Quảng Trị để xem một đội rà phá hiện trường toàn nữ làm việc.

Đoàn gồm có Đại sứ Deborah Paul (Canada), Wendy Matthews (New Zealand), Grete Løchen (Na Uy), và Beatrice Maser Mallor (Thụy Sĩ). Chuyến thăm chính thức dài hai ngày của họ là để trực tiếp tìm hiểu về hậu quả chiến tranh ở Quảng Trị, đặc biệt là nỗ lực đang diễn ra để khảo sát và rà phá bom mìn còn sót lại sau chiến tranh mà còn đe dọa cuộc sống của người dân địa phương. Le Vietnam s’oppose fermement à la décision unilatérale de la Chine d’interdire la pêche en Mer Orientale, dont dans certaines zones maritimes du Vietnam, du 1er mai au 16 août 2019, a déclaré la porte-parole du ministère vietnamien des Affaires étrangères Lê Thi Thu Hang.

Hãng Reuters đưa tin, hai tàu khu trục mang tên lửa dẫn đường của Mỹ ngày 6/5 đã thực hiện chiến dịch bảo đảm tự do hàng hải trên biển Đông.

Theo đó, hai khu trục hạm USS Preble và USS Chung Hoon của hải quân Mỹ đã lưu thông vào khu vực 12 hải lý quanh Đá Gạc Ma và Đá Ga Ven, thuộc quần đảo Trường Sa của Việt Nam, hiện bị Trung Quốc chiếm đóng và cải tạo trái phép.

Trong lịch sử cận-hiện đại của Việt Nam nói chung và miền Nam Việt Nam sau Hiệp định Genève 1954 nói riêng, trường hợp nhân vật lịch sử Dương Văn Minh (1916-2001) có lẽ khá đặc biệt, và không ít người đã coi ông là một vị  tướng lãnh “có vấn đề”. Ông sống nói chung trong sạch, bề ngoài có vẻ luôn khiêm tốn hiền lành nhưng toàn tham gia những đại sự quân chính có tác dụng đảo chuyển hướng đi của lịch sử.

Vào thời kỳ đầu của Việt Nam Cộng Hòa, dưới thời Ngô Đình Diệm, Dương Văn Minh đã từng được coi là anh hùng trong thành tích đánh dẹp lực lượng Bình Xuyên (năm 1954) ở khu Rừng Sác (ngoại vi Sài Gòn) và dẹp tan quân đội của giáo phái Hòa Hảo (năm 1956), được thăng chức Trung tướng (5.1.1956). Hai đại sự khác trong đời ông là việc năm 1963 với tư cách Chủ tịch Hội đồng Quân nhân Cách mạng ông cầm đầu nhóm tướng lãnh đảo chánh lật đổ chế độ Ngô Đình Diệm, và việc năm 1975 với tư cách Tổng thống đã quyết định đầu hàng không điều kiện “đối phương” miền Bắc để kết thúc gọn nhẹ cuộc chiến tranh thảm khốc 30 năm, lập lại hòa bình cho dân tộc Việt. Foxconn tore up a small town to build a big factory, then retreated

TĐH: Terry Gou, Chairman of Taiwanese firm Foxconn, with lots of investments in mainland China, has just announced his running for the presidency of Taiwan, against incumbent president Tsai Ing-wen. So now, stories about Foxconn and Tery Gou begin to take the front pages.

This story is somewhat personal to me. The little village Mount Pleasant in this story is right outside the border of City of Racine, where I worked as an accountant in Racine City Hall in my previous life before going to law school to become a lawyer. Last year, in our summer road trip to the US west coast, my wife and I stopped by Racine to take a look and took some pictures and was surprised by so much infrastructure construction going on. Now I understand the reason – the investment promise (still to be fulfilled) by Foxconn.

Crews are widening Interstate 94 from Milwaukee to the Illinois state line to accommodate driverless trucks and thousands of employees. Village and county taxpayers have borrowed around $350 million so far to buy land and make infrastructure improvements, from burying sewer pipes to laying storm drains.

Online sale of elephant tusks continues to boom

Elephant tusks are available in many places, from souvenir shops and jewelry shops to tourist sites. But the sales there are very small compared with transactions via online markets.

MT, at No 81-83 Nguyen Van Cu street, is a well known souvenir shop in Buon Ma Thuot City. There are many stalls inside, including a jewelry and souvenir stall which display products made of elephant tusks.

Online sale of elephant tusks continues to boom

N, a salesman, showed many products, from bracelets, rings, pens, combs and a section of an elephant tail with black feathers. Each feather was priced at VND100,000.

Reporters acted as buyers seeking to buy a huge elephant tusk block to create a statue. The salesman brought a 2.2 kilogram tusk block, as big as an adult thigh, 10 centimeters long. N said this was an African elephant tusk and affirmed that the food for elephants in Africa was very good, and the quality of African tusks was better than Asian tusks. HÀ NỘI — Seventeen bears – which used to be kept in captivity and illegally traded to harvest their bile – are living in a bear conservation centre in the northern province of Ninh Bình.

The centre was inaugurated by Four Paws, an international animal welfare organisation, in March 2019, in Kỳ Phú Commune, Nho Quan District.

HÀ NỘI — As the summer approaches, people in the capital city of Hà Nội again face a dreadful nightmare of urban life – shortage of clean water.

This year, according to the Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the heat wave will be intense and long with temperatures reaching 39-42 degrees Celsius.

Sài Gòn Power to buy electricity from households with rooftop solar panels

HCM CITY — The Sài Gòn Power Company on April 25 signed net-metering contracts with households in districts 1 and 3 that have rooftop solar power panels.
