Report says ties between the two nuclear-armed countries could deteriorate into an economic or military confrontation
A highly combustible cocktail of Donald Trump’s volatility and Xi Jinping’s increasingly aggressive and autocratic rule threatens to plunge already precarious US-China relations into a dangerous new era, some of the world’s leading China specialists say in a new report.
For the last 18 months a taskforce of prominent China experts, some of whom have dealt with Beijing for more than 50 years, hahes been formulating a series of recommendations on how the incoming White House should conduct relations with the world’s second largest economy.
The group’s report, which was handed to the White House on Sunday and will be published in Washington DC on Tuesday, says ties between the two nuclear-armed countries could rapidly deteriorate into an economic or even military confrontation if compromise on issues including trade, Taiwan and the South China Sea cannot be found.

BEIJING: China warned the United States Saturday (Feb 4) not to destabilise East Asia after Donald Trump’s new defence secretary said an island chain claimed by both Tokyo and Beijing was covered by a US-Japan military accord.

Chinese official says U.S. should stop using Dalai Lama to stir up trouble
BEIJING – The United States should stop using the Dalai Lama to create trouble for China, a senior Chinese official in charge of Tibet affairs told an influential state-run newspaper.
The U.S. is damaging ties with China, said Zhu Weiqun, head of the ethnic and religious affairs committee of the top advisory body to China’s parliament, according to the Global Times.

White House warns China on trade, South China Sea

WASHINGTON: The White House warned China on Monday (Jan 23) that the United States will defend “international interests” in the South China Sea and that trade must be a “two-way street.”
At his first formal daily briefing, President Donald Trump’s press secretary Sean Spicer defended the incoming administration’s wary stance on ties with Beijing.

BEIJING: China on Wednesday (Jan 18) urged the United States not to allow a Taiwanese delegation to attend US President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration.
Trump broke with decades of precedent last month by taking a congratulatory telephone call from Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen, and he has also said the “One China” policy was up for negotiation.

Top Trump adviser Bolton backs U.S. forces in Taiwan, says move could lessen Okinawa burden

Amid increasingly tense Sino-U.S. ties, John Bolton, a former American ambassador to the U.N. and a top adviser to President-elect Donald Trump, has called for a closer U.S. military relationship with Taiwan to help counter a “belligerent” Beijing.
In a commentary published Tuesday in The Wall Street Journal likely to stoke anger in China, Bolton said Washington “could enhance its East Asia military posture by increasing U.S. military sales to Taiwan and by again stationing military personnel and assets there.”
In the commentary, Bolton also noted that the stationing of U.S. military personnel in Taiwan could help alleviate other problems in East Asia, including in Okinawa Prefecture, which hosts the bulk of U.S. forces in Japan. In bursts of 140 characters or less, he has jabbed at Beijing over Taiwan, trade, the South China Sea and, most recently, North Korea. “China has been taking out massive amounts of money & wealth from the U.S. in totally one-sided trade, but won’t help with North Korea.
