During a visit to Singapore, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday that his country was pursuing greater ties across Asia.

TOKYO — Defense Secretary Jim Mattis assured Japan’s prime minister on Friday that the United States would stand by its mutual defense treaty with the country, despite statements by President Trump during last year’s campaign that suggested he might pull back from American security commitments in Asia.

“I want there to be no misunderstanding during the transition in Washington that we stand firmly, 100 percent, shoulder to shoulder with you and the Japanese people,” Mr. Mattis said at the start of a meeting with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

TT – Nó nằm đó thù lù “một cục” trên bờ kè sát con đường Water Front cảng Subic, chiếc tàu ngầm hạt nhân USS Louisville của hạm đội 7 Mỹ, sáng nay thứ tư 27-6. Thật yên ả thả neo trên bến cảng ngày nào là căn cứ hải – không quân Mỹ.

Các thành viên trong Hiệp hội các quốc gia Đông Nam Á (ASEAN) đang ngày càng bị “tranh giành” bởi các nước lớn trong khu vực và trên thế giới. Việc Malaysia “chuyển hướng” mạnh mẽ sang Trung Quốc nhân chuyến thăm Bắc Kinh 6 ngày (từ 30-10) của Thủ tướng Najib Razak cho thấy Trung Quốc đang sử dụng kinh tế như một thứ “sức mạnh mềm” để áp vào nhiều quốc gia Đông Nam Á, khu vực mà chính họ đang dùng “sức mạnh cứng” để hiện thực hóa tham vọng bành trướng trên Biển Đông.

As the war in Iraq winds down and America begins to withdraw its forces from Afghanistan, the United States stands at a pivot point. Over the last 10 years, we have allocated immense resources to those two theaters. In the next 10 years, we need to be smart and systematic about where we invest time and energy, so that we put ourselves in the best position to sustain our leadership, secure our interests, and advance our values. One of the most important tasks of American statecraft over the next decade will therefore be to lock in a substantially increased investment — diplomatic, economic, strategic, and otherwise — in the Asia-Pacific region. In January of 2009, American foreign policy was largely defined by the horrific aftermath of the September 11th attacks, two ground wars in the Middle East, and the worst financial crisis in decades, with the global economy, by many measures, on a worse trajectory than in 1929.

(LLCT) – Cho đến khi kết thúc Chiến tranh lạnh, Mỹ vẫn coi châu Âu là trọng điểm chiến lược. Từ khi Bush (cha) lên cầm quyền, đồng thời với tăng cường thêm lực lượng ở châu Âu, Mỹ bắt đầu chuyển trọng tâm chiến lược toàn cầu sang khu vực châu Á – Thái Bình Dương (CATBD) với mục đích duy trì địa vị siêu cường trong thế kỷ mới. Chiến lược đối với CATBD của chính quyền B.Clintơn bắt đầu rõ nét hơn. Bản tuyên bố toàn diện nhất về chính sách mới đối với khu vực đã được Winston Lord trình bày trước Ủy ban Đối ngoại Thượng viện: Đối với Mỹ, không có khu vực nào quan trọng hơn CATBD và không có khu vực nào khác có tầm quan trọng như thế đối với Mỹ trong thế giới mới.

On Jan. 13, 2011, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gave what turned out to be a remarkably prescient speech in Doha, Qatar. “The region’s foundations are sinking into the sand,” she warned. If you do not manage to “build a future that your young people will believe in,” she told the Arab heads of state in the audience, the status quo they had long defended would collapse. The very next day, Tunisia’s dictator was forced to flee the country. Almost two weeks later, hundreds of thousands of Egyptians thronged Cairo’s Tahrir Square demanding that then-President Hosni Mubarak step down. Over the following week, Clinton and her colleagues in the Barack Obama administration engaged in an intense debate over how to respond to this astonishing turn of events. Should they side with the young people in the streets demanding an immediate end to the deadening hand of autocratic rule, or with the rulers whom Clinton had admonished, but who nevertheless represented a stable order underpinned by American power and diplomacy?
