International Waters Governance – Mekong

Mekong

Legal Basis:

The Mekong River Commission (“MRC”) governs the allocation and utilization of the Mekong River waters by four countries – Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos. The MRC was founded in 1995 pursuant to the Agreement on the Cooperation for Sustainable Development of the Mekong River Basin (the “1995 Agreement”), which was signed and entered into force at Chiang Rai, Thailand on 5 April 1995. On 5 April 2010, the heads of state of Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos met in Hua Hin, Thailand for the first MRC Summit to mark the 15th anniversary of the adoption of the 1995 Agreement. The parties adopted a joint declaration—the Hua Hin Declaration—reaffirming their commitment to implementing the 1995 Agreement. The 1995 Agreement was the result of more than 40 years of regional and supra-regional efforts to manage the resources of the Mekong River Delta. In the mid-1950s, the United Nation’s Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East (“ECAFE”) and the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation sent teams to the Mekong to examine water management issues. Both ECAFE and the U.S. Government published detailed reports of their findings. Tiếp tục đọc “International Waters Governance – Mekong”

Corrupt Vietnam Gov’t officials cashing in on massive timber theft from Cambodia

LONDON: Corrupt Government officials and military personnel in Vietnam are complicit in smuggling huge quantities of illegal timber from Cambodia, a new report reveals.

Those involved are pocketing millions of dollars in bribes from timber smugglers for their part in allowing hundreds of thousands of cubic metres of logs stolen from Cambodia’s National Parks to be laundered into Vietnam’s voracious timber economy.

The revelations are featured in the new report ‘Repeat Offender: Vietnam’s persistent trade in illegal timberPDF from the London-based Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA), released just days before Vietnam and the European Union (EU) are due initial an agreement seeking to ensure only legal timber is exported from Vietnam. This is a hard, tough and durable wood with no termites, even if it is buried underground. Tay and Nung ethnic minorities like using nghien wood to make columns of houses and floors. Walking on nghien-made floors never produces creaking. Nghien-made chopping boards are favored, because the knife cuts are clean won’t leave debris.

How many red-shanked doucs are left on Vietnam’s Son Tra peninsula?

TUOI TRE NEWS

Updated : 05/24/2017 18:55 GMT + 7

While a recent independent study claimed that there are still over 1,300 red-shank doucs on central Vietnam’s Son Tra peninsula, primate experts believe the number to be much lower.

Red-shanked doucs are monkey-sized primates characterized by their golden face, black hands and feet, and maroon-red ‘stockings’ from their knees to their ankles.

The endangered species, native to central Vietnam, are known locally as ‘the queen of all primates’ due to their extravagant appearance. Tiếp tục đọc “How many red-shanked doucs are left on Vietnam’s Son Tra peninsula?”
