Strengthening Women’s Land Rights in Vietnam

Strengthening Women’s Land Rights in Vietnam

Friday, April 3rd, 2015

ICRW – It is very promising to see gender being included in important discussions around land policy. While we have made great strides incorporating gender perspective in this sector, much more work needs to be done to address the unique challenges and barriers women face that prevent them equal access to land and resources.

Last week, I had the honor to participate in the Annual World Bank Conference on Land and Poverty, which brings representatives from governments, civil society, the private sector and development community to foster a dialogue and share best practices to improving land governance. At the conference, I presented initial findings from an innovative project, which is developing and training teams of grassroots legal advisors to help women farmers in Vietnam realize their land rights. Central African Republic: the fight against impunity

ohchr
(Italic by TĐH)

A country that does not investigate or hold to account those who are responsible for crimes and violence risks continued and future fighting because the rage, injustice and fear felt by victims festers, gets passed on to future generations and eventually can explode, said UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein.

“There must be judicial accountability,” he said. “This individual accountability is an important factor in eroding the dangerous perception that a whole community is collectively responsible for the violence that has taken place. Lack of accountability will generate feelings of cynicism and distrust…and breed the idea that people need to arm to prevent atrocities from happening again.”

Her story is at the center of the “The Storm Makers”, a documentary by French-Cambodian filmmaker Guillaume Suon, who spent three years filming human trafficking victims and traffickers in the impoverished Southeast Asian nation. TOKYO — On June 24, Chinese political cartoonist Wang Liming, better known as Rebel Pepper, tweeted about the scariest nightmare he ever had. He found himself surrounded by seven or eight people, secret agents sent by the ruling Chinese Communist Party to arrest him. Their leader, Colonel Light, demanded that Rebel Pepper leave Japan with them; when he refused, they threatened to push him off a balcony. Soon, Japanese police arrived and surrounded the building, but Colonel Light and his men floated away ominously. Rebel woke up that morning, afraid for his life. Having left China for Japan, Rebel had thought that his nightmares would end. But they only grew more absurd, more crazed, more intense.

Beyond the Climate Refugee: Migration as Adaptation

Australia Drought

Globe-net: July 14, 2015  – Washington, D.C.—Between 2008 and 2013, some 140 million people were displaced by weather-related disasters; meanwhile, gradual displacements, such as those caused by droughts or sea-level rise, affected the lives of countless others.

These “climate refugees” have become the human face of global warming, their very movement seen as a threat to global security.

State of the World 2015 contributing author Francois Gemenne exposes the dangers of misrepresenting climate-induced migration as a decision of last resort, rather than as a choice in human adaptation (www.worldwatch.org).

“The conception of migrants solely as victims…might actually hinder their capacity to adapt, and induce inadequate policy responses”

“The conception of migrants solely as victims…might actually hinder their capacity to adapt, and induce inadequate policy responses,” writes Gemenne, executive director of the Politics of the Earth program at Sciences Po in Paris and a senior research associate with the University of Liège in Belgium.

Why Southeast Asia’s Refugee Crisis Matters

Thediplomat – For summer and fall 2015, The Diplomat presents “Southeast Asia: Refugees in Crisis,” a series of exclusive articles from scholars and practitioners tackling Southeast Asia’s ongoing refugee crisis. Launched with the help of former ASEAN Secretary-General Surin Pitsuwan and designed with the assistance of students from Harvard University and Oxford University, the series aims to give the readers a sense of the various dimensions of this complex issue.

In our first piece, former ASEAN Secretary-General Surin Pitsuwan and The Diplomat’s associate editor Prashanth Parameswaran launch the series with a framing article on the issue.

In May 2015, thousands of Rohingya refugees from the Rakhine State of Myanmar and economic migrants from Bangladesh were found stranded in the Strait of Malacca off the coast of Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. This was the start of the latest round of Southeast Asia’s refugee crisis. The image of the overcrowded, shabby boats full of people – haunted and hungry, faced with dwindling supplies of food and water – seized the world’s attention.
