La folie des grandeurs

Painting of West Lake by Hanoi-based artist George Burchett.

by George Burchett*

Around the time Admiral Charles Rigault de Genouilly (1807-1873), under the orders of Emperor Napoleon III, fired the first canon shots of the Cochinchina campaign (1858-1862) to lay claim to what would become France’s colony of Indochina, Paris embarked on an epic renovation project directed by Baron Georges-Eugène Haussmann, also under the Emperor’s orders. The plan was to modernise Paris and get rid of insalubrious slums – breeding ground for diseases as well as popular discontent.  No doubt rich plunder from the colonies helped fund this – largely successful – imperial enterprise. Phụ nữ trong khoa học: Những góc nhìn

TS – 07/03/2018 08:00 – Ann Hibner Koblitz*

Viet Nam News HÀ NỘI — The Nhuệ-Đáy river basin continues to suffer from pollution despite a range of environmental protection projects that have been carried out by several agencies, including Hà Nội’s Department of Natural Resources and Environment.

Lê Tuấn Định, deputy head of the department, said the level of pollution in the water had steadily worsened and that many stretches of the river were seriously polluted, especially during the dry season.

He said, the water quality in the Nhuệ and Đáy rivers would improve when they received water from the Hồng (Red) River.

However, statistics from the department show that the water level of the Hồng River has been low since 2003. Tiếp tục đọc “Nhuệ-Đáy river basin polluted despite clean-up efforts”

Thang Long Citadel bunker opened to the public

Last update 14:38 | 19/12/2017

The underground military operation bunker where the Vietnamese government worked during the American War in Thang Long Imperial Citadel has been opened to visitors for the first time.

The Thang Long Heritage Conservation Centre opened the bunker and exhibition about the general command headquarters on the occasion of 45th anniversary of victorious air defence of Hanoi during the American bombing raids of Christmas 1972.

The bunker was built in early 1965 by military engineers. They demolished the two-storey command building to disguise and cover the bunker. The bunker has three rooms, covering 64 square metres. The roof is 1.5 metres higher than the ground and has three layers to protect officers against falling bombs and rockets. It was supposed to be a shelter even against nuclear or chemical weapons.

Decisions issued during the 1972 air battle and supply routes for the south were from the site. The first sirens warning of US air force attacks were approved in the bunker.

After 1975, the bunker was largely abandoned until it was renovated in 2012.
