Young entrepreneurs have come up with a creative way to have visitors to Hoi An City take part of its famous nipa palm forest home as souvenirs, Hoai Nam reports

Trương Tấn Thọ, 39, earns a living making traditional paper.

Apart from the famous (poonah) paper, his firm in Hoi An City, called Giấy Việt (Vietnamese paper), also makes paper from the pulp of bamboo and mulberry trees.

A few years ago, Thọ hit up on the idea of using the stems of the nipa palm (called water coconut in Viet Nam), found in profusion in the area, to make paper and paper products, using the know-how he had acquired in making traditional paper with local materials. Ho Chi Minh City leaders met with local tourism companies on Thursday to discuss ways to meet a target of welcoming seven million international visitors this year.

The southern tourism hub received 5.2 million foreign holidaymakers in 2016 and experienced a 15 percent jump in tourist numbers during Q1 2017, though experts are still unsure the city will meet such a lofty goal.

In the Jan-Mar period, more than 1.5 million international visitors spent holidays in Ho Chi Minh City, but Bui Ta Hoang Vu, director of the municipal tourism department, said the quarterly growth must be more than 20 percent for the seven-million target to be met. A market for street vendors has been put into operation for over one year at Pham Van Hai Market in HCMC’s Tan Binh District.

Some 20 households have been approved by local authorities to run business at the market at night time, which helps reduce encroachment on public pavements by street vendors.

It is expected that more spaces will be set up at other districts in HCMC to help street vendors run business.

Chinese have flocked to Vietnam in recent days as they have been prohibited to travel to other countries.

Entering Vietnam with passports, staying in Vietnam and working without work permits, some Chinese are distorting Vietnam’s history and sovereignty.

The Voice of Vietnam (VOV) reported that Da Nang City authorities have seized thousands of posters from Jeep Tour, a tourism company in Ngu Hanh Son district.
