China has protested about a visit by Philippine military chiefs to a disputed island in the South China Sea, but Manila maintained on Saturday that it owns the territory where Filipino troops and villagers have lived for decades.

The public argument comes amid a thaw in once-frosty relations between the neighbours after Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte took office last June and moved to rekindle Manila’s friendship with Beijing, which has been strained by long-seething territorial disputes. Philippines seeks to rename marine zone after China shows interest

MANILA: The Philippines said on Saturday it was planning to change the name of a stretch of water east of the country in a bid to highlight its sovereignty over the area, which was surveyed recently by a Chinese vessel.

A Chinese survey ship was tracked for several months late last year moving around Benham Rise – declared part of the Philippines’ continental shelf in 2012 by the United Nations, stirring concern in Manila about Beijing’s possible intentions.

China says the ship was simply passing through the area and was not engaged in any other activity, and the country’s foreign minister said last week China fully respects the Philippines’ maritime area rights over Benham Rise.

In an address to military officers, the Philippine leader said he “asked China if they can patrol the international waters without necessarily intruding into the territorial waters of countries,” referring specifically to the Sulu Sea between Mindanao and Borneo.

“We would be glad if we have their presence there,” he added. Tiếp tục đọc “Duterte asks China to help patrol piracy-prone southern waters”

Vì sao ngư dân Philippines “được phép” tiếp cận bãi cạn Scarborough?

ANTGCác chuyên gia phân tích quốc tế đánh giá việc Trung Quốc để ngư dân Philippines trở lại ngư trường Scarborough chỉ là một biến tướng mới của chiêu bài biến khu vực không có tranh chấp thành khu vực tranh chấp rồi tiến tới “gác tranh chấp để cùng khai thác lợi ích chung” mà nước này vẫn sử dụng trên Biển Đông.

Thêm một chiếc đũa tách khỏi “bó đũa” ASEAN

ANTG – 14:20 07/11/2016

UPDATED: Imagery Suggests Philippine Fishermen Still Not Entering Scarborough Shoal

Despite earlier reports, it appears that Filipino fishermen are still not fishing inside Scarborough Shoal. New imagery from October 29 showed a China Coast Guard (CCG) vessel anchored just inside the mouth of the lagoon, where it has been for most of the period since China seized the shoal in 2012, apparently blocking access. At least 17 Philippine fishing vessels were present along the exterior of Scarborough’s reef. This corroborates reports that Filipino fishermen fished “just outside Scarborough’s lagoon” over the last week. There were also two Chinese civilian ships in the vicinity. According to the Philippine Navy, three other CCG vessels continue to patrol near Scarborough. Tiếp tục đọc “UPDATED: Imagery Suggests Philippine Fishermen Still Not Entering Scarborough Shoal”

Duterte’s Flip-Flop Into Bed With China Is a Disaster for the United States

Duterte’s Flip-Flop Into Bed With China Is a Disaster for the United States

International relations theorists of a “realist” persuasion like to claim that states are rational actors pursuing their strategic interests in an anarchic world where power alone matters. Ideology and domestic politics do not much concern these thinkers; they believe that a nation’s foreign policy is much more likely to be shaped by factors such as geography, demography, and economics.
