For many of us, chocolate is more than just a tasty treat. It’s a mood lifter, an energy booster, a reward after a tough day, a favorite holiday gift. 

People also choose dark chocolate in particular for its potential health benefits, thanks to studies that suggest its rich supply of antioxidants may improve heart health and other conditions, and for its relatively low levels of sugar. In fact, more than half of people in a recent survey from the National Confectioners Association described dark chocolate as a “better for you” candy.

But there’s a dark side to this “healthier” chocolate. Research has found that some dark chocolate bars contain cadmium and lead—two heavy metals linked to a host of health problems in children and adults. 

The chocolate industry has been grappling with ways to lower those levels. To see how much of a risk these favorite treats pose, Consumer Reports scientists recently measured the amount of heavy metals in 28 dark chocolate bars. They detected cadmium and lead in all of them.

(KTSG) – Hiệp định Thương mại tự do giữa Việt Nam và EU (EVFTA) là một trong số các FTA thế hệ mới có tầm ảnh hưởng lớn đối với Việt Nam, vì EU là một trong những đối tác thương mại hàng đầu của ta và vì đó được xem là cái gạch nối giữa quá khứ với hiện tại giữa hai bên, được đặt nền móng từ nhiều thế kỷ trước bởi các đoàn tàu buôn của châu Âu tới các thương cảng Vân Đồn, Phố Hiến, Hội An, Bến Nghé của ta. Có lẽ vậy, dù mới khởi động EVFTA đã tạo nhiều dấu ấn.

A recent test by research institute the Pasteur Institute on poultry and pork samples taken from local markets revealed that 100 percent of the meat was contaminated with E. coli because of unhygienic conditions at marketplaces and slaughterhouses.

Sixty-four percent of seafood samples also tested positive for the bacteria.

euractive_Monsanto has paid for its refusal to appear before the European Parliament by losing its right to enter it, as MEPS have shut the door on their lobbyists until further notice. EURACTIV France reports.

The Conference of the Presidents – composed of the leaders of the European Parlaiment’s groups – decided on Thursday (28 September) to withdraw the right of the American company’s lobbysts to access the Parliament’s buildings.

“We have just officially refused access to the European Parliament to Monsanto lobbyists. This decision has been taken by the Conferenfe of the Presidents on 28 September,” explained Marc Tarabella, head of the Belgian Socialist Party delegation, in a press release.

Pork without traceable origin to be barred from Ho Chi Minh City markets

Ho Chi Minh City is looking to ban all pork without origin traceability from its markets, starting at the end of this month, a move expected to improve the municipality’s food safety records.

Poultry and eggs are the next foods to undergo the origin-tracing scheme in the southern metropolis.
