VietNamNet Bridge – While the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) has said that adding swimming to the official curricula is necessary, parents are protesting the plan, saying that this would burden students.

MOET has shown its strong determination to teach swimming to all general school students.
Nguyen Duc Huu, deputy director of MOET’s primary education department, citing figures to show that the number of drowning deaths is on the rise, said it is necessary to teach swimming as an official subject not only at primary schools but at secondary schools, high schools, junior colleges and universities.

Droughts in Somalia. Water rationing in Rome. Flooding in Jakarta and Harvey-battered Houston. It doesn’t take a hydrologist to realize that there is a growing global water crisis. Each August, water experts, industry innovators, and researchers gather in Stockholm for World Water Week to tackle the planet’s most pressing water issues. STOCKHOLM, Aug 24 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) – The world needs to use water more efficiently rather than exhausting invisible underground supplies and blindly exporting “virtual water” to avert a global crisis that would undermine food and energy systems, a leading expert warned.
More than one-third of humanity is water-stressed every year or season, while drought crises are on the rise from California to Ethiopia as the planet warms, said Fred Boltz, who leads The Rockefeller Foundation’s work on science and environment. An estimated 5 percent of deaths in Bangladesh are attributable to drinking water with high levels of arsenic, researchers sayBy Thin Lei Win
BANGKOK, Aug 28 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) – Almost a quarter of a century after public health experts discovered mass public poisoning in Bangladesh caused by water contaminated with arsenic, the government is planning a new push to end the scourge, while researchers are designing an app to find safe sites for new wells.
About 20 million Bangladeshis, or one in eight, have been drinking water with arsenic levels higher than the government’s limit of 50 microgrammes (μg) per litre, said Kazi Matin Uddin Ahmed, geology department chair at the University of Dhaka.
