Inequality has been rising in most countries around the world, but it has played out in different ways across countries and regions. The United States, it is increasingly recognized, has the sad distinction of being the most unequal advanced country, though the income gap has also widened to a lesser extent, in Britain, Japan, Canada and Germany. Of course, the situation is even worse in Russia, and some developing countries in Latin America and Africa. But this is a club of which we should not be proud to be a member.

Nếu không có ngày thống nhất đất nước 30/4/1975, liệu miền Nam ngày nay có phát triển như Hàn Quốc không? Sự thật là nền kinh tế VNCH cho đến 1975 hoàn toàn không có nội lực gì, phụ thuộc hoàn toàn vào viện trợ Mỹ và nguồn tiền mà lính Mỹ chi tiêu. Do đó, nếu không có sự kiện 30/4 và Mỹ cũng không còn viện trợ kinh tế ồ ạt mỗi năm hơn nửa tỷ USD thì nền kinh tế VNCH phải mất nhiều năm tập cai sữa rồi mới có thể tập bò rồi tập đi bằng đôi chân của mình. Vì thế hãy thôi ảo tưởng quá khứ đi, Sài Gòn là hòn ngọc viễn đông nhưng là hòn ngọc do sự có mặt của người Mỹ tạo ra chứ không phải do nền kinh tế VNCH và những người dân bản địa tạo nên.
