A project to provide coconut farmers with advice over their mobile phones aims to help them cash in on a growing market and lift them out of poverty By Thin Lei Win
BANGKOK, May 10 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) – Generosa Gonato’s mobile phone beeped with a warning for the coconut farmer in the southern Philippines to be vigilant against bud rot, a common disease that is fatal for coconut trees. The message included the symptoms and how to treat it.
“So I monitored my trees and discovered some have it,” Gonato told the Thomson Reuters Foundation by phone. HÀ NỘI – Three more avian flu outbreaks have been recorded in the Central Highlands provinces of Đắk Lắk and Đắk Nông, according to the Department of Animal Health under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Everyone knows that it is costly to obtain a license to export rice, but rice exporters had never revealed how much a license costs until the director of a rice export company mentioned this at a seminar recently.

Các nhà nghiên cứu gần đây đã phát hiện rằng một loại bắp ngô biến đổi gen nhằm chịu được thuốc diệt cỏ glyphosate (được cho là có nguy cơ gây ung thư cao) có sự khác biệt đáng kể về phân tử so với loại bắp ngô truyền thống.
Phương pháp đánh giá ‘Tương đồng Cơ bản’
Năm 1993, Tổ chức OECD đưa ra một báo cáo có tên “Đánh giá an toàn của thực phẩm có nguồn gốc công nghệ sinh học hiện đại”, trong đó thuật ngữ ‘Tương đồng Cơ bản’ lần đầu được sử dụng để đánh giá thực phẩm biến đổi gen. Ngày 27/4 vừa qua hội Minh Khai PYA vừa tròn 4 năm hoạt động. Trên tinh thần sống khiêm tốn, thành thật và yêu người, hội là nơi để cho các bạn trẻ thực hành tư duy tích cực, đồng thời qua các hoạt động, hội góp phần phát triển giáo dục và văn hóa tại địa phương.
Vì tinh thần sống tích cực yêu đời và yêu người luôn sẵn có trong lòng mỗi người, do vậy qua 4 năm thế hệ nối tiếp thế hệ, các bạn trẻ trong PYA luôn truyền cho nhau ngọn lửa sống tích cực và duy trì nhịp đập không ngừng nghỉ của hội.

The department said that around 700 ducks and chickens in two farming households in Cao Bằng City’s Ngọc Xuân Ward were infected and died.
The local veterinary agency and local authorities have culled around 2,000 infected poultry and implemented measures to disinfect the area where the outbreak has been reported, to prevent it from spreading further.
So far, the country has recorded six H5N1 and two H5N6 outbreaks, in Cần Thơ City, Cao Bằng, Vĩnh Long, Đắk Lắk, Quảng Ninh and Thừa Thiên Huế provinces, the department said, warning that the risk of bird flu outbreaks is very high in the near future.
Việt Nam has not recorded other strains of bird flu virus such as A/H7N9, A/H5N2 and A/H5N8, but the department is concerned that these viruses may enter the country through livestock being brought in illegally, especially from the northern border provinces.
All regions should implement preventive measures to prevent and contain bird flu, it said, urging locals to help by preventing the illegal poultry imports.
Though the foot-and-mouth disease and swine flu in pigs have been controlled, the department recommends that local authorities keep an eye out, especially in areas that have already seen outbreaks. — VNS

At large supermarket chains such as Big C and Vinmart, apples and pears from the US and France are quoted at a low VND40,000-90,000 per kilo.
