Sotheby’s auction of the exclusive licensed rights to the Widi Reserve, more than100 environmentally protected islands that cover 25,000 acres in Indonesia, has been delayed from its originally scheduled date last week. The holdup follows backlash from environmental groups, which say the privatization and development of the islands could cause ecological damage and interfere with life in coastal communities.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken gave a speech on Monday in which he denounced the practice of arbitrary detention, calling it “completely unacceptable.” He’s correct, but what’s especially puzzling about this practice is that states sometimes use it even when it is contrary to their stated aims and damaging to their overall interests.

TTO – Cò đất, hoặc gọi sang hơn là môi giới bất động sản, đang là nghề khá hot và được quan tâm hiện nay. Để hiểu được phần nào về nghề đang thu hút nhiều người này, chúng tôi đã nhập vai làm cò đất.

Với mức thu nhập cao nếu “mát tay”, từ nông thôn đến thành thị, từ sinh viên mới ra trường tới dân trí thức hay những người đang làm các ngành khác cũng có thể làm môi giới tay trái hoặc hoàn toàn tay phải. 

Sau khi tìm hiểu, tôi bắt đầu ứng tuyển vào Công ty Hùng Anh (đã đổi tên) chuyên bán nhà phố (mặt tiền, hẻm, biệt thự) ở trung tâm TP.HCM với phân khúc từ 10 tỉ đồng trở lên, gồm các quận 1, 3, 5, Tân Bình, Bình Thạnh, Phú Nhuận, quận 2 cũ, lâu lâu có “hàng” tốt thì cũng “đá” sang các quận khác.

Hơn 2.500 hải cẩu chết hàng loạt

Một số lượng lớn hải cẩu có nguy cơ tuyệt chủng đã chết trên bờ biển Caspi của Nga, hãng thông tấn RIA Novosti hôm 4/12 đưa tin.

Các quan chức từ Cơ quan Tài nguyên Thiên nhiên tại Dagestan, một khu vực ở phía tây nam nước Nga, ban đầu cho biết chỉ có khoảng 700 con hải cẩu chết được tìm thấy dọc theo bờ biển Caspi vào ngày 3/12, nhưng “thật không may, con số này đã tăng lên đáng kể và hiện ở mức 2.500 con”.

“Tiếng Việt từ TK 17: một số từ Hán Việt thời LM de Rhodes” (phần 37)

Loạt bài “Tiếng Việt từ TK 17” đã đề cập đến một số cách dùng Hán Việt đặc biệt như sinh thì (~qua đời, chết), Kinh Tại Thiên, Kinh Tin Kính, Kinh Thiên Chúa, lịch sự, thượng hoà hạ mục, thượng phụ, trung phụ, hạ phụ, thượng đế, thiên chủ/chúa …v.v…Phần 37 này bàn thêm về cách dùng một số từ Hán Việt thời LM de Rhodes đến truyền đạo: sự (~thờ) 事, thửa (~ sở) 所,  kì 其, giao cảm 交感, tinh thần 星晨, đang/đương thì 當時, củ thủ 糾手, thiểu ngữ 少語. Đây là lần đầu tiên cách dùng này hiện diện trong tiếng Việt qua dạng con chữ La Tinh/Bồ (chữ quốc ngữ).

Tài liệu tham khảo chính của bài viết này là bốn tác phẩm của LM de Rhodes soạn: (a) cuốn Phép Giảng Tám Ngày (viết tắt là PGTN), (b) Bản Báo Cáo vắn tắt về tiếng An Nam hay Đông Kinh (viết tắt là BBC), (c) Lịch Sử Vương Quốc Đàng Ngoài 1627-1646 và (d) tự điển Annam-Lusitan-Latinh (thường gọi là Việt-Bồ-La, viết tắt là VBL) có thể tra tự điển này trên mạng, như trang http://books.google.fr/books?id=uGhkAAAAMAAJ&printsec=frontcover#v=onepage&q&f=false.

Các bản Nôm của LM Maiorica là ĐCGS (Đức Chúa Giê Su), KNLMPS (Kinh Những Lễ Mùa Phục Sinh), CTTr (bộ Các Thánh Truyện), MACC (Mùa Ăn Chay Cả), TCTM (Thiên Chúa Thánh Mẫu), TCTGKM (Thiên Chúa Thánh Giáo Khải Mông). Trang/cột/tờ của VBL được trích lại từ bản La Tinh để người đọc tiện tra cứu thêm. Tương quan Hán Việt ghi nhận trong bài không nhất thiết khẳng định nguồn gốc của các từ liên hệ (có gốc Việt hay Hán).

Tại buổi lễ, Bộ trưởng Bùi Thanh Sơn chúc mừng Văn phòng PCA chính thức đi vào hoạt động, hiện thực hóa cam kết của hai bên tại Nghị định thư năm 2021. “Việt Nam đánh giá cao vai trò của PCA là cơ quan giải quyết tranh chấp quốc tế, đã đóng góp hiệu quả và tích cực vào giải quyết tranh chấp giữa các quốc gia và giữa quốc gia với các tổ chức, bảo đảm tuân thủ luật pháp quốc tế, góp phần duy trì hòa bình và an ninh quốc tế,” Bộ trưởng Bùi Thanh Sơn khẳng định.

The Gulag Archipelago is Solzhenitsyn’s masterwork, a vast canvas of camps, prisons, transit centres and secret police, of informers and spies and interrogators and also of heroism, a Stalinist anti-world at the heart of the Soviet Union where the key to survival lay not in hope but in despair. The work is based on the testimony of some two hundred survivors, and on the recollection of Solzhenitsyn’s own eleven years in labour camps and exile. It is both a thoroughly researched document and a feat of literary and imaginative power.

For 30 years, developing nations have fought to establish an international fund to pay for the “loss and damage” they suffer as a result of climate change. As the COP27 climate summit in Egypt wrapped up over the weekend, they finally succeeded.

While it’s a historic moment, the agreement of loss and damage financing left many details yet to be sorted out. What’s more, many critics have lamented the overall outcome of COP27, saying it falls well short of a sufficient response to the climate crisis. As Alok Sharma, president of COP26 in Glasgow, noted:

Friends, I said in Glasgow that the pulse of 1.5 degrees was weak. Unfortunately it remains on life support.

But annual conferences aren’t the only way to pursue meaningful action on climate change. Mobilisation from activists, market forces and other sources of momentum mean hope isn’t lost.

G20 Summit Focuses on Ukraine War

A draft communiqué from today’s Group of Twenty (G20) summit in Bali, Indonesia, said “most members strongly condemned the war in Ukraine” and its consequences for the world economy, the Financial Times reported. The draft also denounced using or threatening to use nuclear weapons. Russian President Vladimir Putin did not attend the summit, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appeared in a video address.  Deals on climate policy and funding were also announced, with the U.S. and Indonesian presidents unveiling a $20 billion plan (Bloomberg) to move Indonesia away from coal power. Ahead of the summit, Brazil, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Indonesia said they will cooperate on forest preservation (Reuters). The countries collectively contain more than half the world’s tropical rain forests.

Biden, Xi Hold First In-Person Meeting

U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping signaled an interest in improving cooperation (Nikkei) on global issues during their first in-person meeting of Biden’s presidency. The meeting lasted three hours, and they also discussed policy toward Taiwan (NYT), China’s human rights record, and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, according to a White House readout. The readout said Biden told Xi that U.S. policy toward Taiwan has not changed, and that Washington objects to Beijing’s “coercive and increasingly aggressive reactions” toward the island. The leaders spoke in Bali, Indonesia, where they will attend the Group of Twenty (G20) summit this week. Their meeting comes amid tensions related to U.S. restrictions on China’s chip sector and Chinese military drills that followed U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan in August.

ASEAN and China announce ACFTA upgrade

PHNOM PENH, 13 November 2022 – The Leaders of ASEAN and China welcomed the official launch of negotiations for the upgrade of the ASEAN-China Free Trade Area (ACFTA). The upgrade negotiations are meant to ensure that ACFTA contributes to the further deepening and broadening of ASEAN-China economic relations and to both region’s post-pandemic economic recovery. The announcement on the upgrade of the ACFTA was made at the 25th ASEAN-China Summit.

The ACFTA is ASEAN’s oldest FTA among its Dialogue Partners. Upgrading the ACFTA sends a signal to the private sector and all stakeholders that both ASEAN and China are committed to make the ACFTA more relevant to businesses, future-ready, and responsive to global challenges.
