The jailing of Joshua Wong, Hong Kong’s youthful “face of protest”, and of his fellow activists Nathan Law and Alex Chow, is technically a matter of law but in reality one of politics. Two of them had already carried out community service for unlawful assembly or inciting unlawful assembly; the third had received a suspended sentence. That was not enough. They have been at the forefront of the pro-democracy movement, inspiring many more in Hong Kong to rally in defence of the greater freedoms it has enjoyed compared to the mainland under the “one country-two systems” formula. Authorities have been determined to silence these voices. By appealing against the “rather dangerous” supposed leniency of the original sentences, they have succeeded, for now. Khi Internet và điện thoại có chức năng kết nối 3G trở thành vật bất ly thân của mỗi người, những kẻ chống phá đất nước triệt để lợi dụng bằng các chiêu trò tạo dựng, phát tán các thông tin, hình ảnh giả tạo, sai lệch, biến có thành không, không thành có, từ đó lôi kéo, hướng lái dư luận ngả theo quan điểm sai trái, lâu dần hình thành tư tưởng định kiến, chống phá đất nước, nhân dân.

Thời gian qua tại Trung Quốc xảy ra nhiều vụ bất ổn liên quan đến chính sách thu hồi đất đai khiến Thủ tướng Ôn Gia Bảo phải lên tiếng.

Trong chuyến thăm tỉnh Quảng Đông vừa qua, Thủ tướng Trung Quốc Ôn Gia Bảo tuyên bố ông hiểu được sự phẫn nộ của nông dân khi bị lấy đất và cam kết sẽ để họ có tiếng nói tập thể trong các quyết định về đất đai, theo Tân Hoa xã.

Chuyến thăm của ông Ôn diễn ra sau khi ở Quảng Đông xảy ra một số vụ biểu tình phản đối của người dân, điển hình nhất là tại làng Ô Khảm hồi cuối năm 2011. Bên cạnh đó, chuyện cưỡng chế đất cũng gây sóng gió tại một số địa phương khác, theo Nhân Dân nhật báo. Các vụ việc này phản ánh một thực trạng nhức nhối khi nông dân Trung Quốc bị đẩy vào thế chống đối để bảo vệ nguồn sống do bị một số thế lực nhân danh chính quyền sử dụng đất phi pháp và kiếm lời bất chính. “Tại sao vấn đề này lại lan rộng? Đó là do chiếm đất của người dân một cách độc đoán… Cốt lõi của vấn đề nằm ở chỗ đất là nguồn sống của nông dân nhưng quyền lợi của họ không được bảo vệ theo đúng nghĩa của nó”, Tân Hoa xã dẫn lời Thủ tướng Ôn nói tại Quảng Đông. HÀ NỘI — The Việt Nam Journalists Association yesterday urged the Hà Nội Police to undertake an urgent investigation of an attack on Việt Nam Television journalists that occurred while they were working on an undercover live report in Sóc Sơn District.

Tuesday’s guilty verdict comes amid concern about the growing influence of Islamist groups, who organised mass rallies during a tumultuous election campaign that ended with Basuki Tjahaja Purnama losing his bid for another term as governor. Công an điều tra vụ hàng trăm người dân chặn quốc lộ 1A

Trước việc cả trăm người dân tụ tập, cản trở giao thông trên quốc lộ 1A, Công an thị xã Kỳ Anh (Hà Tĩnh) đã khởi tố vụ án để điều tra.

Ngày 9/4, đại tá Đặng Hoài Sơn, Trưởng công an thị xã Kỳ Anh (Hà Tĩnh) cho biết, vừa khởi tố vụ án Gây rối trật tự công cộng để điều tra việc người dân tụ tập, gây ùn tắc trên quốc lộ 1A.

Theo tài liệu điều tra, trong hai ngày 2-3/4, lấy lý do chính quyền đền bù sự cố môi trường chưa thỏa đáng, khoảng 150 người dân mang lưới đánh cá, gạch đá kéo ra chặn xe trên quốc lộ 1A đoạn qua đèo Con, khu vực giáp ranh phường Kỳ Phương và Kỳ Nam (thị xã Kỳ Anh). Sự việc khiến phương tiện qua đây bị tắc nghẽn kéo dài.

Demonstrators marched in Vietnam’s capital on Monday to mark the 28th anniversary of a bloody naval battle with China and to denounce China’s growing assertiveness in the hotly contested waters of the South China Sea.

About 150 people wearing headbands and carrying large banners circled the busy streets around Hanoi’s Hoan Kiem lake chanting “Down with invasive China”.

Key Findings

  • With populist and nationalist forces making significant gains in democratic states, 2016 marked the 11th consecutive year of decline in global freedom.
  • There were setbacks in political rights, civil liberties, or both, in a number of countries rated “Free” by the report, including Brazil, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Hungary, Poland, Serbia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Tunisia, and the United States.
  • Of the 195 countries assessed, 87 (45 percent) were rated Free, 59 (30 percent) Partly Free, and 49 (25 percent) Not Free.
  • The Middle East and North Africa region had the worst ratings in the world in 2016, followed closely by Eurasia.
