Proposed dam to poses more threat to Vietnam’s Mekong Delta: conference
Updated : 05/13/2017 14:00 GMT + 7
The environment and lives of dozens of millions of people living in the Lower Mekong Basin are being threatened as the Mekong River is expected to see yet another hydropower dam construction, experts said at an international conference on Friday.
Experts all express concerns over the Laos-proposed Pak Beng dam, the latest to be built on the Mekong River, as they convened for a consultation process held by the Vietnam Mekong River Commission in the southern Vietnamese city of Can Tho. Climate change to challenge Mekong River Delta in 2017

The growth rate declined in the 2010-2016 period, especially in the last three years, with considerable decreases in 2015 and 2016 due to climate change effects.
The volume of water flowing to the delta has decreased seriously. The Mekong Delta lives on agriculture and fisheries, with services and industries all related to farm produce distribution and processing.
Le Anh Tuan from Can Tho University, in his article on Thoi Bao Kinh Te Sai Gon, warned that 2017 would continue to be a difficult year for agricultural production in the Mekong Delta due to problems in water supply. Water resources have been diminishing rapidly since 2000.

When rains finished in December 2016 and early 2017, signs of water shortage and saline intrusion at estuaries began appearing.
In late January 2017, the salinity measured in the area 20-25 kilometers from the coastline to the mainland was 2 percent. It is expected to increase rapidly in the dry season. Tiếp tục đọc “Climate change to challenge Mekong River Delta in 2017”

Mekong Delta urged to store fresh water for 2017 dry season

Localities in Mekong Delta are now taking initiative in storing water and cooperating with each other in exploiting water sources, getting ready to cope with drought and saline intrusion.
According to the Central Center for Hydrometeorology Forecasting, the 2016-2017 dry season is likely to end later than usual. It said the drought would be less severe than in 2015-2016, while the water level on Mekong River would be low and influenced by tides. Mekong Delta sinks into the sea
vietnamnet.vn_The Mekong Delta is sinking 2.5cm every year because of ground water extraction and unreasonable planning and constructions on the surface.

Farmers use underground water during dry season
The problem was discussed at a conference about sinking threat and solution for the Mekong Delta on March 21 in Can Tho City. Tiếp tục đọc “Mekong Delta sinks into the sea”
Mekong Delta shifts strategy, takes advantage of benefits of flooding

Le Anh Tuan, deputy head of the Climate Change Research Institute under Can Tho University, said it was necessary to reconsider third-crop rice cultivation.
Tuan said many years ago, ensuring food security was the priority for the Mekong Delta.
Therefore, farmers tried to cultivate three rice crops a year to increase productivity. In order to do this, they had to build embankments to prevent floods. Tiếp tục đọc “Mekong Delta shifts strategy, takes advantage of benefits of flooding”

Vietnam’s Mekong Delta struggles with garbage amid lack of treatment plants
Updated : 03/26/2017 12:51 GMT + 7
Rubbish has turned into a perennial problem in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta as current waste treatment projects barely meet the rising demand from rapid urbanization.
Local authorities are scratching their heads over the aching issue since the existing waste treatment factories are becoming overloaded.
Vinh Long is among the very few provinces in the ‘rice bowl of Vietnam’ to have a local waste treatment facility, which was developed by Phuong Thao Joint Stock Company. Tiếp tục đọc “Vietnam’s Mekong Delta struggles with garbage amid lack of treatment plants”

HCM CITY — Up to four centimetres of land subsidence occurs in the Mekong Delta each year, and exploitation of groundwater is one of several factors causing it.
“The consequences of land sinking are much more serious than those of climate change and rising seas, especially in urban areas where people exploit groundwater,” Assoc Prof Dr Nguyễn Hiếu Trung of Cần Thơ University told a seminar held in Cần Thơ on Tuesday titled “Land subsidence in Mekong Delta: challenges and future solutions”.
