I am an attorney in the Washington DC area, with a Doctor of Law in the US, attended the master program at the National School of Administration of Việt Nam, and graduated from Sài Gòn University Law School. I aso studied philosophy at the School of Letters in Sài Gòn. . I have worked as an anti-trust attorney for Federal Trade Commission and a litigator for a fortune-100 telecom company in Washington DC. I have taught law courses for legal professionals in Việt Nam and still counsel VN government agencies on legal matters. I have founded and managed businesses for me and my family, both law and non-law. I have published many articles on national newspapers and radio stations in Việt Nam. In 1989 I was one of the founding members of US-VN Trade Council, working to re-establish US-VN relationship. Since the early 90's, I have established and managed VNFORUM and VNBIZ forum on VN-related matters; these forums are the subject of a PhD thesis by Dr. Caroline Valverde at UC-Berkeley and her book Transnationalizing Viet Nam. I translate poetry and my translation of "A Request at Đồng Lộc Cemetery" is now engraved on a stone memorial at Đồng Lộc National Shrine in VN. I study and teach the Bible and Buddhism. In 2009 I founded and still manage dotchuoinon.com on positive thinking and two other blogs on Buddhism. In 2015 a group of friends and I founded website CVD - Conversations on Vietnam Development (cvdvn.net). I study the art of leadership with many friends who are religious, business and government leaders from many countries. Ðặt chân tới Sài Gòn năm 1954 [vậy bài này viết khoảng 2004.], lúc ấy tôi là đứa bé 9 tuổi, theo gia đình từ miền Bắc di cư vào miền Nam tự do. Ký ức của đứa bé 9 tuổi hẳn nhiên không thể ghi nhận được gì nhiều; nhưng đứa bé lớn lên và sinh sống tại Sài Gòn từ thuở ấy tới bây giờ, đã giúp tôi dễ dàng gợi dậy trong ký ức, ít nhất là những hình ảnh đậm nét của Sài Gòn, 50 năm về trước.

Ấn tượng về Sài Gòn trong tôi từ lúc ấy tới bây giờ cũng không phai nhạt bao nhiêu, dù đã hơn nửa thế kỷ trôi qua. Ấn tượng sâu đậm, bởi Sài Gòn những ngày tháng ấy quá mới lạ trong tâm trí tôi, đứa trẻ đã trải qua một đoạn đời ấu thơ tại Hà Nội.

Chào các bạn,

Mấy hôm nay có chuyện rắc rối giữa ca sĩ Mỹ tâm và nhạc sĩ Vũ Xuân Hùng liên quan đến tác quyền của bài “Anh Thì Không.” Mình không nói đến chuyện này. Ca sĩ và nhạc sĩ luôn tạo sức mạnh cộng hưởng cho nhau trong âm nhạc. Mong rằng hai vị sẽ vượt qua được những tổn thương hiện nay để cùng hỗ trợ nhau trong lĩnh vực âm nhạc, ngõ hầu mai sau khi nói đến nhạc phẩm “Anh Thì Không” người ta sẽ nhắc đến một câu chuyện có hậu.

Mình chỉ muốn nói đến một vấn đề lớn hơn. Đó là thông tin qua vài bài báo mình đọc, một số fans của Mỹ Tâm lên mạng đến mọi nơi có bài không ủng hộ Mỹ Tâm, và comment chửi bới bằng những lời lẽ dữ dằn, thô tục, thiếu học thức, chống NS Vũ Xuân Hùng và những người viết bài có vẻ ủng hộ NS.

Đương nhiên là mỗi chúng ta có quyền nói lên ý kiến của mình. Nhưng nói chuyện văn minh là một chuyện. Vượt giới hạn lịch sự và lễ giáo, để đến mức chửi bới thô tục dữ dằn, thì đó lại là chuyện khác. “This is my husband,” said 94-year-old Nguyen Thi Xuan, holding up a pillow wrapped in a Vietnamese flag, with a Japanese army shirt pushed inside. She sleeps with it every night.

Xuan is among the few surviving widows of Japanese soldiers who were shipped home in the aftermath of World War II, many never to see their Vietnamese families again.

Maze-like sidewalk fences pose challenges for pedestrians in Ho Chi Minh City

Sidewalks along a major hospital in Ho Chi Minh City have been equipped with a complicated system of barricades, an effort originally meant to reclaim space from vendors for pedestrians but now turning out to create immense difficulty for the latter.

Promenades along the sections of Thuan Kieu and Nguyen Chi Thanh Streets that surround Cho Ray Hospital, considered the city’s best general infirmary located in District 5, have been fenced up to prevent sidewalk drivers and street vendors from encroaching on the spaces.

However, the fences have been put up like a maze, proving to be obstacles for local pedestrians.

According to observations by Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reporters, the barriers were about 1.5 meters high, spanning over 200 meters around the hospital.

The sidewalks were divided into two sections, one for motorbike parking and the other exclusively for walkers.

The entrances to the pedestrian zones were filled with fences planted in a zigzag design, not only making it difficult for sidewalk drivers and food vendors but also for pedestrians to enter.

After observing for nearly an hour, the journalists only saw about five people walking in the preserved space while many others chose to walk on the roadways to save time and effort.

Some people took advantage of the barriers to hang their hammocks whereas a few vendors also managed to place their stalls, chairs, and stables inside the walking areas.

SINGAPORE: Singapore has consistently abided by its “One China policy” and been a consistent friend and supporter of China’s peaceful development, said Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean in a written interview that was published on Sunday (Feb 26).

Commenting on the “broad and longstanding relationship” between the two countries, DPM Teo said that the two countries have worked well together to advance common interests, despite different perspectives on some issues.

Both countries also have a common interest in building a peaceful and growing region, and “this is much greater than any occasional differences of views”, he added.

Work starts on $524mn environmental sanitation project in Saigon

The Ho Chi Minh City administration on Friday kick-started the second stage of a World Bank-sponsored project aimed to improve the city’s environmental sanitation in District 2.

The Second Ho Chi Minh City Environmental Sanitation Project is intended to improve wastewater services in a sustainable manner in selected areas of Ho Chi Minh City and increase awareness on sanitation, according to the World Bank.

The key component of the project is the construction of a large interceptor that will convey the wastewater, currently discharged on the east side of the Saigon River without treatment, to the wastewater treatment plant that will be constructed under the project. Beijing has hit back at Donald Trump after the US president risked reigniting a simmering feud with China by accusing it of being the “grand champion” of currency manipulation.

After months of turbulence and uncertainty between the world’s two biggest economies, relations appeared to settle two weeks ago after the US president and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, held their first phone conversation since the billionaire’s inauguration.

However, in an interview with Reuters on Thursday that also saw Trump reiterate his desire for American nuclear supremacy, the US president, who has attacked China over trade, Taiwan, North Korea and the South China Sea, threatened to undermine the tentative rapprochement with a fresh verbal assault.

Developments in Hong Kong have affected confidence in the city’s autonomy, though its rule of law remained robust “despite challenges”, the British government has said.

Britain handed the former colony back to China in 1997 with guarantees it would retain extensive autonomy, an independent legal system and broad personal and commercial freedoms under a deal known as “one country, two systems”.

The international financial hub has seen tumultuous times over the past couple of years, with pro-democracy protests quelled in what many residents see as creeping interference by Beijing and the rise of a small but vocal movement pushing for independence.

PHNOM PENH – Even before a Cambodian judge sentenced land rights activist Tep Vanny to prison, her fellow campaigners said her fate had already been sealed.

Vanny, who fought the evictions of thousands of residents from lakeside land in Phnom Penh to make way for a luxury real estate project, was sentenced to 2½ years on Thursday for her role in a protest outside Prime Minister Hun Sen’s residence in 2013.

She was found guilty of inciting violence and assaulting security guards while trying to deliver a petition to Hun Sen on the land dispute.

The conviction came despite eyewitness testimony that neither Vanny or other protesters had committed acts of violence. It was criticized by campaigners as another step in a crackdown on dissent.

“The courts do not use their conscience. They just wait for orders from powerful men,” said Vanny, a mother of two in her mid-30s, during a recess before her verdict. “It’s easy to use the court. MANILA: More than 1,000 people took to the streets of Manila on Saturday to protest Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s brutal war on drugs, following the arrest of his most high-profile critic.

The protestors massed outside the national police headquarters where Senator Leila de Lima was detained on Friday, in a demonstration against the alleged death-squad murders of thousands of drug suspects.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Indonesian citizen detained in Malaysia in connection with the alleged assassination of Kim Jong Nam has maintained that she was duped into committing the act, believing that she was part of a prank on a TV show.

This was according to Indonesia’s Deputy Ambassador to Malaysia, Andriano Erwin, on Saturday (Feb 25), after a 30-minute meeting with Siti Aisyah.

Truong Dinh Hoe, secretary general of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), said that in the last 10 years, Vietnam has struggled against unhealthy competition and slandering campaigns triggered by rivals.

According to Hoe, in January 2017, Cuatro TV in Madrid gave false information about Vietnam’s catfish farmed in the Mekong River. The report said the catfish was being bred in unclean cages and not fed standard fish, but dead fish and other waste, which was why Vietnamese could provide fish at such low prices. Vietnam localities defend receiving costly cars gifted by local businesses

Authorities from one Vietnamese city and another province have addressed public concerns over luxury cars gifted to the local governments by local businesses, saying the practice is by no means a legal or ethical issue.

State entities in the central city of Da Nang and the southernmost province of Ca Mau have attracted public attention following reports from local media outlets that a number of state-owned cars at their disposal were presents from the local business community.
