Written from Vietnam: It’s in the mail!

I knew instantly that I would never see it. Three months after Christmas, I was still waiting for a postcard sent by my mum. As my eldest brother noted over the phone, there was a little bit of Christmas cash tucked inside for me.

Considering that the Vietnamese postal system has always opened every single letter and parcel I’ve ever received, I knew the money would be taken. Although I hoped I’d at least receive the card, minus the cash, it never came. Tiếp tục đọc “Written from Vietnam: It’s in the mail!”

Subsidence causes road leading to Ho Chi Minh City to be wavy

Serious subsidence has caused a major route leading to the east entrance of Ho Chi Minh City to become ‘wavy,’ endangering vehicles traveling on the road.

A section of Hanoi Highway, which connects District 9 in Ho Chi Minh City with neighboring provinces to the east of the city, has had its surface heavily distorted by severe subsidence.

As a large amount of traffic flows on the highway on a daily basis, its surface has become wave-like, with the gaps measuring about 10 to 20 centimeters deep, causing immense challenges for vehicles.

Commuters have to travel at a snail’s pace in order to avoid potential accidents. Tiếp tục đọc “Subsidence causes road leading to Ho Chi Minh City to be wavy”

Exclusive: Vietnam’s ‘double standards’ in ivory trade

Al Jazeera Investigative Unit’s report raises questions about Vietnam’s commitment to tackle wildlife trafficking.

14 November 2016

Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit has uncovered evidence that Vietnam is still a major market for illegal wildlife products, despite Hanoi’s stated commitment that it is tackling the issue.

The investigation comes a few days before the Southeast Asian nation hosts an international conference on stopping the illicit trade.

On Saturday, Vietnamese authorities in the capital ground down and burned two tonnes of ivory and 70kg of rhino – all seized from smugglers –  in a symbolic move designed to show the government’s commitment to thwarting wildlife crime. The Pentagon says a group of US warships is headed to the western Pacific Ocean to provide a physical presence near the Korean Peninsula.

The strike group, called Carl Vinson, includes an aircraft carrier and will make its way from Singapore towards the Korean Peninsula.

The development comes in response to North Korea’s “reckless, irresponsible” conduct, a US navy official said, referring to recent missile tests.

“US Pacific Command ordered the Carl Vinson Strike Group north as a prudent measure to maintain readiness and presence in the Western Pacific,” Commander Dave Benham, spokesperson at US Pacific Command, told AFP news agency. Tiếp tục đọc “US strike group heads towards Korean Peninsula”

BÌNH THUẬN — Extreme weather conditions resulting in a complex tide phenomenon, landslides and sea erosion are threatening coastal areas in central Bình Thuận Province, authority officials and local people have said.
Mai Kiều, director of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said this week that landslides and erosion constantly hitting the province’s 10km coastline over the past 10 years had caused extensive damage to local life.
Tuy Phong District was the hardest hit area, with hundreds of households in the communes and townships, including La Gi, Tân Phước, Vĩnh Tân and Tiến Thành, faced with the high possibility of having to flee their homes.
Landslides and erosion have been increasingly impacting agricultural production; infrastructure, including roads and sea dykes; and particularly many protective forests.
The sea has completely destroyed over 450m of sea dykes and damaged nearly 300 houses and dozens of hectares of forest in the two areas of La Gi and Tân Phước alone, according to Kiều.
Last month, sea tides and waves 3-4m high devastated 150 households in Vĩnh Tân Commune, with some 300m of coastline completely eroded.
