Indigenous group takes Brazil to court in landmark case

This is the first time the Brazilian state stands accused of indigenous rights violations at an international courtBy Sam Cowie

SAO PAULO, April 21 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) – An international human rights commission has accused Brazil of failing to obey its own constitution and ringfence ancient tribal territories in a landmark court case that pits the state against indigenous people.

Brazil could be forced to pay damages if it loses the trial in the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, which is hearing evidence from both sides in Guatemala.

“This case could strengthen the fight of indigenous people, who continue to have their rights threatened in Brazil,” said Raphaela Lopes, a lawyer at Global Justice, a non-governmental organisation that is supporting the case.

The case seeks to end a vicious dispute over land which the indigenous Xucuru people say has dragged on for 27 years, cost it lives and threatens to erode an ancient way of life.

“Our case is emblematic of indigenous people across Brazil,” Marcos Xucuru, leader of the indigenous group, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation by telephone.

“More than 20 years after the constitution, demarcating land is still in chaos, during which time violence against indigenous people continues to increase,” said Xucuru.

Brazil has been a pioneer in setting aside – or demarcating – parcels of land for its indigenous people, a process meant to safeguard their culture, ward off unwelcome incomers and enshrine legal rights over ancient turf. Tiếp tục đọc “Indigenous group takes Brazil to court in landmark case”

A garbage collection station in District 3 of HCM City.

At the collection stations, rubbish is collected, sorted for disposal and then transferred to dumping sites or treatment zones, but these unhygienic tasks have been performed in public areas.

Meanwhile, current garbage stations are dilapidated and overloaded, polluting the environment and becoming a nightmare for those living nearby.

A garbage collection station located at the Quang Trung-Tan Son Intersection in Go Vap District is an example. The station has become a nightmare for local people, including hundreds of students and teachers from the school nearby.

Le Van Truc, resident in Ward 8, told Ha Noi Moi (New Ha Noi) newspaper that the garbage collection station was built ten years ago, causing a terrible odour and traffic chaos.

He said locals asked authorised agencies to move the station, but received no reply.

In the area near September 23 Park in District 1, three stations plague the downtown area of the city. The one on Hai Ba Trung Road has become overloaded due to the large amount of rubbish collected from Ben Nghe and Ben Thanh wards.

Pham Le Nghia, resident in Ben Nghe Ward, said garbage was collected twice a day. Tiếp tục đọc “HCM City residents plagued by overloaded dumps”

Trinh Con Son wrote, “The Great Circle of Vietnam,” which envisions people holding hands in a circle large enough to encompass his nation.

Over the weekend, news filtered out that Vietnam had lifted a days-old ban on a beloved song by Trinh Con Son, who irritated the South and infuriated the North during years of fighting.

On April 11, Vietnam’s ruling Communist government decreed that “Noi vong tay lon” (“The Great Circle of Vietnam”) could no longer be broadcast or played in public.

The decision came in response to a request from Trinh’s family, who wanted to mount a tribute on April 21 at the Huế College of Medicine and Pharmacy. Tiếp tục đọc “In Rare Reversal, Vietnam Lifts Days-old Ban on Beloved Songwriter’s Work”

Explore Vietnam’s special ancient temple

Last update 13:00 | 19/12/2016

VietNamNet Bridge – Hon Ba Temple in the southern province of Ba Ria – Vung Tau is one of the most special temples in Vietnam. It was built in 1781 to worship the Thuy Long goddess.

Hon Ba (the Lady Island), also known as “Ba Vien Dan” (three cannon rounds) or Archinard Island, is a small island in Vung Tau City. Hon Ba Temple or Lady Temple is located on the island.

The temple was built in 1881 by a follower named Ho Quang Minh. From the foot of the island to the temple runs a winding road with solid three-step at its end. In 1939, Archinard, a Frenchman officer, aimed three cannon rounds at the temple for the purpose to demolish it, but only one hit the corner of the temple. Not much damage was made. Soon after that, the officer lost his life with his own gun due to his carelessness. That is why the island is called “Three cannon rounds” or Archinard. Local people, however, call it Hon Ba. Binh Dinh province has 134km of coastline with coastal waters surrounded by small islands and a diverse ecosystem comprising coral reefs, seagrass beds and aquatic animals.

The province is rich in aquatic resources with more than 500 fish species, 38 of which have high economic value. Pelagic fish accounts for 65 percent of total reserves, about 38,000 tons, while ground fish accounts for 35 percent of total reserves, or 22,000 tons.

The province has the fleet of 7,339 fishing boats with total capacity of 980,838 CV. The sea resources and biodiversity in the locality bring a comfortable life to local people.

However, Tran Van Phuc, deputy director of Binh Dinh Agriculture Department, said the environment and local biodiversity have been seriously degrading. Tiếp tục đọc “Scientists warn about danger to VN coral reefs”

The financial picture of Vietnam’s 10 largest banks

Last update 10:04 | 17/02/2017

VietNamNet Bridge – Profits from lending still make up a large proportion of banks’ total profits, but bad debt remains a problem.

Under a plan on applying Basel II standards on a trial basis, 10 commercial banks, namely BIDV, VietinBank, Vietcombank, Techcombank, ACB, VP Bank, MB, Maritime Bank, Sacombank and VIB, will finish the trial period in 2018.

Dau Tu Chung Khoan quoted Le Quang Hai, consultancy director of KTC Auditing, as commenting that the banks’ major income is still from lending.

VP Bank’s financial report showed its net profit in the first nine months of 2016 at over VND10 trillion, far higher than that of some commercial banks. The success is explained by the fact that VP Bank now owns a leading consumer finance company.

Profits from lending still make up a large proportion of banks’ total profits, but bad debt remains a problem.

VP Bank’s success in consumer finance could be a prompt for other banks to jump on the bandwagon. A joint venture between MB and a Japanese partner has been set up, while banks where the state holds controlling stakes are also considering joining the market.

Hai, after analyzing the financial reports of the 10 banks, found that VP Bank has the biggest margin between deposit and lending interest rates, 8 percent on average.

Meanwhile, the margin at Sacombank is 1.95 percent only.

The average interest rate gaps are now 3.3 percent for state-owned banks and 4.5 percent for joint stock banks.

However, at many banks, the proportion from non-credit activities has been increasing. Vietcombank had the lowest proportion of income from lending in the fourth quarter of 2016, at 74.6 percent.

Its net profit from services was as high as VND2.1 trillion. It had VND1.85 trillion from foreign exchange trade and VND1.939 trillion from other activities.

Sacombank and Techcombank, which are among the best joint-stock banks, also have low proportions of income from lending. Sacombank earned VND500 billion from forex trading in the first nine months of 2016, equal to that of Vietinbank and BIDV – the two big banks owned by the state.

VIB, Techcombank and MB are joint stock banks which have relatively high ratios of net profit on outstanding loans – 4.5-4.9 percent, while the figure is just 3.3 percent for state-owned banks.

Of the nine banks which have released their updated financial reports (Maritime Bank has only released the 2015 finance report), Vietcombank is the ‘cleanest’ bank as it has bought back all the bad debts it sold to VAMC some years ago.

Meanwhile, bad debts still burden other banks. Dien Dan Doanh Nghiep reported that BIDV had to make provision of VND9 trillion against risks for loans, which is equal to more than half of the VND17 trillion of profit.

Shrimp waste used to make animal feed, biological derivatives

Last update 10:15 | 16/02/2017

VietNamNet Bridge – Shrimp waste – heads and shells – are being used to produce animal feed and biological derivatives, resulting in high profits and a reduction of air pollution at processing plants.

Six years ago in Ca Mau province, the ‘metropolis’ of the aquaculture and seafood processing industry, shrimp shells discharged from processing were in piles as high as a mountain.

Every day, Minh Phu Seafood JSC threw away 50-100 tons of shrimp heads and shells. The mountain of shrimp waste produced a bad odor after being exposed to the sun and rain.

This prompted Hoang Viet Tung, a member of the board of directors of VNF, to draw up a plan to take advantage of the waste. He signed contracts with large seafood companies on buying shrimp waste from them.

VNF collects more than 100 tons of waste products every day. The company undertakes all the steps of the waste collection process to ensure quality and hygiene of the waste.

Shrimp waste – heads and shells – are being used to produce animal feed and biological derivatives, resulting in high profits and a reduction of air pollution at processing plants

In the past, shrimp heads and shells thrown on the ground contained impurities. Now, VNF sets up conveyor belts to put shrimp waste into tanks.

With the belts, VNF can collect shrimp heads and shells just 30 minutes after the waste is split from seafood processing factories. The biggest value is that it can help settle environmental problems using high technology. Tiếp tục đọc “Shrimp waste used to make animal feed, biological derivatives”
