On 17th June 2024, Filipino and China Coast Guards clashed at sea. Armed with knives and axes, this is the worst clash in recent memory. With tensions running high, many question if the USA will step in, and whether Manila will invoke the mutual defense treaty it has with the US.

As confrontations with China increase in frequency, the Philippines has deepened its partnership with Australia, and also Japan. On 8th July 2024, Japan and the Philippines signed the reciprocal access agreement, which is a landmark defence deal that allows both nations to hold joint military drills in each other’s territories.

Why have there been so many clashes between Philippines and China in the South China Sea in the last 2 years? How are countries like the US, Japan and Australia related to the South China Sea conflict?

Có một kịch bản chung không thể đảo ngược ở tất cả các con sông, dù chúng có mặt ở bất cứ nơi nào, đó là nếu đã xây đập thủy điện và khai thác cát quá mức, tất yếu sẽ cạn kiệt phù sa dẫn tới biến dạng sông, xói lở hạ du, hạ thấp lòng dẫn, rút chân đồng bằng, …

Không ai mường tượng hết những gì sẽ xảy ra, bởi mọi chuyện giờ mới chỉ bắt đầu.

“Hồi tôi mới về công tác thì các bãi này còn rất rộng, có những điểm chiều rộng cả km, nhưng giờ đã mất sạch”, ông Vũ Thanh Thuận, Hạt phó Hạt Đê điều Hải Hậu, nhìn ra dải bờ biển kể trong tiếng sóng vỗ dưới chân kè nhà thờ đổ Trái tim Chúa của giáo xứ Xương Điền, xã Hải Lý, điểm được kè để giữ lại chứng tích của những trận xói lở. “Sóng đánh vào làm nứt chân đê, đất cát dần trôi ra, đê bị hở hàm ếch, xong bị sập dần từng đoạn”.

“Trước năm 1995, lở dần bãi ngoài đê, đê có dấu hiệu bị dọa vỡ ở nhiều điểm, chính quyền đã vận động dân di dời vào phía trong và bắt đầu đắp tuyến đê số hai ở sâu bên trong để dự phòng”, ông Thuận nhớ lại. Cuộc di chuyển kéo dài trong chục năm theo tốc độ ăn vào của biển, một số hộ chuyển sâu vào phía trong đê số hai, một số hộ không còn đất để chuyển vào đã bỏ đi miền Nam.

MoIT warns about international trade fraud

HÀ NỘI — The Vietnamese trade offices in many foreign markets have continuously warned Vietnamese businesses to be careful to avoid international trade fraud.

The number of Vietnamese businesses encountering fraud and scams with more sophisticated methods has risen and many businesses have lost tens of thousands of US dollars, even up to millions of US dollars, from the end of last year until now.

“Cú ám sát” Huawei bất thành của Mỹ

Nhà sáng lập Huawei Nhậm Chính Phi thường nói về cuộc chiến giữa tập đoàn này với Mỹ bằng ngôn ngữ quân sự. “Tới lúc cầm súng, lên ngựa và ra trận”, ông nói trong họp nội bộ hồi năm 2018. Thông điệp cho năm sau của ông là nhân viên Huawei sẽ cột mình vào xe tăng để kéo ra chiến trường.

Theo The Economist, kiểu ví von dữ dội này dễ hiểu: Huawei liên tục bị Mỹ nhắm tới suốt hơn 10 năm qua. Năm 2012, chính quyền Mỹ bắt đầu cáo buộc Trung Quốc dùng tập đoàn này cho mục đích tình báo. 

Mỹ còn truy tố giám đốc tài chính Huawei, đồng thời là con gái ông Nhậm, bà Mạnh Vãn Chu (theo họ mẹ) năm 2018 vì vi phạm lệnh cấm vận với Iran. 

Tới 2020, cuộc chiến của Mỹ trở thành tổng lực khi hầu hết các công ty nước này bị cấm kinh doanh với Huawei, các công ty quốc tế bị Mỹ cấm bán chip và thiết bị có sử dụng công nghệ Mỹ cho tập đoàn Trung Quốc. Mỹ thậm chí vận động các nước không sử dụng thiết bị Huawei trong hạ tầng viễn thông.

Nearly 33,000 Vietnamese granted US citizenship in 2023

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) reports that 32,800 Vietnamese nationals were naturalized as U.S. citizens in 2023, ranking Vietnam among the top ten nations with most citizenship naturalization in the U.S.

The government agency’s recent report reveals that the U.S. naturalized 878,000 individuals in 2023, marking one of the highest counts in recent years. Naturalizations during the fiscal years 2022 and 2023 account for 24% of all U.S. naturalizations in the last decade, with over 7.7 million new citizens welcomed during this time.

Vietnam was ranked sixth among the countries with the highest numbers of citizens gaining U.S. citizenship in 2023, with 32,800 individuals naturalized—an increase of 500 from 2022.

Consumers’ belt tightening hits businesses

Dang Hoang of HCMC has been cutting back on discretionary purchases like dining out, coffee and branded clothing since the beginning of this year.

The 31-year-old marketing employee says he has been waiting for discounts to find cheap clothes and cooking at home to reduce expenses.

A survey by market research company NielsenIQ Vietnam found 62% of consumers chose to cook at home in the first quarter of the year to save money, a three point increase from the previous quarter.

ADB keeps Việt Nam’s growth outlook unchanged

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) keeps the growth outlook for Việt Nam in 2024 and 2025 unchanged at 6 per cent and 6.2 per cent respectively, on the back of a strong first-half performance.

HÀ NỘI — The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has kept the growth outlook for Việt Nam in 2024 and 2025 unchanged at 6 per cent and 6.2 per cent respectively, on the back of a strong first-half performance in 2024.

The forecast was released on Wednesday in the latest edition of Asian Development Outlook (ADO), which periodically provides assessment of recent economic developments in Asia and the Pacific and medium-term macroeconomic projections for the region.

The violence in the capital Dhaka on July 16, 2024, was the latest flare-up in a deepening conflict over the issue.
