The Hanoitimes – Local authorities are trialing ways to prevent multinationals from structuring affairs in order to divert profits to low tax jurisdictions.

Tax authorities are stepping up efforts to deal with possible tax avoidance or evasion by foreign-invested enterprises (FIEs) to ensure that they pay the tax due in Vietnam.
The revenue loss associated with tax issues was equal to 1% of Vietnam’s GDP.

BẾN TRE – The unusually early saltwater intrusion this year is threatening the farming of flowers and ornamental plants in Bến Tre Province’s Chợ Lách District, the Cửu Long (Mekong) Delta’s largest producer of flowers and ornamental plants.

Chợ Lách is growing more than 11 million pots of flowers and ornamental plants for Tết (Lunar New Year), which falls on January 25 next year, according to the district Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Development. HO CHI MINH CITY – Vietnam is being hit by a pork shortage, brought on by the scourge of swine fever and the U.S.-Chinese trade war, just before Tet, the Lunar New Year — a holiday in which pork plays a key role — approaches.

The swine fever virus has been spreading through Asia and devastating pig populations in a number of countries.  It is estimated that one-fourth of the global supply of pigs has died this year. Meanwhile, the trade war has made imported U.S. pork more expensive in China, which has turned to Vietnam and other sources, cutting into the supply in Vietnam. Vướng thủ tục cùng nhiều lý do khó hiểu, 48 cá thể động vật hoang dã đã bị nhốt trong lồng sắt ở nhà kho của Hải quan Quảng Trị. Sau nửa tháng kể từ lúc bị “tạm giam”, mới có quyết định thả số động vật hoang dã về môi trường tự nhiên, nhưng gần 1 nửa đã chết.

Ngày 19.12, lãnh đạo UBND tỉnh Quảng Trị cho biết, vừa ra quyết định xử phạt đối với ông Nguyễn Hà Dư (sinh năm 1978, trú tại TP.Đông Hà, tỉnh Quảng Trị) 80 triệu đồng vì vận chuyển lâm sản trái phép. Ngoài việc phạt tiền, cơ quan chức năng còn tịch thu số lâm sản và chiếc xe ôtô mà ông Dư dùng để vận chuyển lâm sản. SINGAPORE (Reuters) – Vietnam said it hoped China would show restraint in the South China Sea next year after a Chinese oil survey vessel and its escorts spent months within Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone in what Hanoi called a blatant violation of its sovereignty.

Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc’s raising of the ASEAN gavel last month signalled not only Vietnam’s commencement as chair of the regional grouping, but also the start of a critically definitive period for its foreign policy in the South China Sea.

2020 is set to be a busy year for Vietnam, with several force multipliers for its foreign policy. Beyond its chairmanship of ASEAN’s Vision 2020 goals – predominantly stability in the region – Hanoi will also balance a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council and potential international legal action against Beijing. While such diplomatic responsibilities come with significant pressure, the opportune timing provides Hanoi a chance to engage the international community in its maritime security interests. U.S. issues final order on duties on certain steel products from Vietnam

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U.S. Commerce Department said on Monday it had issued a final order imposing duties of up to 456% on certain steel products from South Korea or Taiwan that are shipped to Vietnam for minor processing and then exported to the United States.

The agency said in a statement that it had found corrosion-resistant steel products and cold-rolled steel produced in Vietnam using substrate of South Korean or Taiwanese origin had circumvented U.S. anti-dumping and anti-subsidy duties.
