President Trump posted on his social media account a private message sent to him by NATO Secretary-General Rutte. It sparked a storm of criticism.

Many European social media users angrily denounced Rutte’s remarks as kowtowing to power and betraying Europe.

Of course, some also praised him, or argued that Rutte’s seemingly quite “sycophantic” message was actually a strategy—saying what President Trump “likes to hear” in order to make Trump let his guard down, thus gaining the upper hand at the negotiating table.

Naturally, this explanation was quickly challenged. Netizens pointed out that Europe has consistently compromised with the U.S., yet the other side has not stopped making excessive demands.

There were even more bizarre takes. Some netizens argued that criticisms accusing Rutte of betraying Europe and asserting that Europe should not yield to the U.S. were actually helping countries like Russia by “driving a wedge between the U.S. and Europe.”

China hasn‘t been spared either, finding itself in the crosshairs of disinformation from all directions.

Unsurprisingly, these views was promptly rebutted.

Come on, get your news straight, ok? 🙄The Chinese Foreign Ministry has clearly stated that the so-called “China threat” has no leg to stand on. China won’t stand for anyone making things up and using China as an excuse to push their own agenda. Putin also made it clear that Russia has nothing to do with what’s going on in Greenland right now. Heck, even Denmark’s Arctic Command has called out Trump’s claims that Russia and China are a direct threat to Greenland.

Seriously, folks, one netizen nailed it straight up: Trump’s just using China as a convenient scapegoat and political bogeyman. Then another fired back saying, honestly, the United States itself that is provoking Europe to stand against… well, the United States.

The most objective comment I’ve seen so far is probably this one 👇

What a circus.😆But personally, my focus remains on the fact that Trump has, yet again, posted a private text message on a public platform… lt’s not very dignified for any president of any country or state, in my opinion.
