Battery Storage – Cost Projections for Utility-Scale

NREL

Battery storage costs have evolved rapidly over the past several years, necessitating an update to storage cost projections used in long-term planning models and other activities. This work documents the development of these projections, which are based on recent publications of storage costs. The projections show a wide range of storage costs, both in terms of current costs as well as future costs. Although the range in projections is considerable, all projections do show a decline in capital costs, with cost reductions by 2025 of 10-52%. The cost projections developed in this work utilize the normalized cost reductions across the literature, and result in 21-67% capital cost reductions by 2030 and 31-80% cost reductions by 2050. The cost projections are also accompanied by assumed operations and maintenance costs, lifetimes, and round-trip efficiencies, and these performance metrics are benchmarked against other published values.

Earth is heating at a rate equivalent to five atomic bombs per second. Or two Hurricane Sandys.

The heat absorbed in Earth’s oceans reached a new record in 2019, found a recent study published in the journal Advances in Atmospheric Sciences. Despite the fact that this has been the case for almost every year over the past decade, this information dominated the news cycle, with some particularly viral headlines noting that the amount of energy accumulating in the oceans is equivalent to detonating five Hiroshima atomic bombs per second, every second over the past 25 years.

Three ways national development banks can unlock climate-smart growth

There is no doubt the world is facing a climate emergency. We must all act now to shift to climate-smart growth by redirecting our current investment and financing flows towards the Paris Agreement. National development banks (NDBs) have huge untapped potential to support this transformation. But our new report finds that despite their collective firepower – which far exceeds that of the multilateral and bilateral development banking system – NDBs have yet to step out of the shadows and into the international and domestic limelight. It is now time for NDBs to claim their rightful place at the policy table.

The European Parliament is set to approve on Wednesday (12 February) a trade agreement with Vietnam, despite some MEPs and NGOs seeking to postpone their consent until the human rights situation improves in the country.

The agreement, concluded after six years of negotiations, would be the most ambitious deal signed with a developing nation.

It will eliminate 99% of the tariffs over a seven-year period and will reduce other non-tariff barriers for cars wines and spirits. It will also protect Europe’s geographical indications  on products including Champagne, Rioja and Parmigiano.

“The deal will give a boost to the prosperity both of the EU and Vietnam, and represents a great opportunity for European exporters and investors”, said Parliament’s rapporteur, Belgian conservative Geert Bourgeois.

Vietnam is known for its textile and technology exports, especially smartphones. Samsung represents around 20% of the goods the country sends overseas.

Vietnam and EU sign ‘milestone’ free trade agreement

The European Union and Vietnam on Sunday (30 June) signed a long-awaited free trade deal that will slash duties on almost all goods, an agreement that pushes back against a rising tide of global protectionism and hailed as a “milestone” by Brussels.

But human rights organizations and some political groups were calling to postpone the approval until the country improves further its human rights and labour conditions.

During the debate held in the plenary of Tuesday, political groups including the EPP, Socialists, the liberal Renew Europe group and conservatives spoke in favour of giving their consent to their agreement, while the Identity and Democracy, the Greens and the Left-GUE were against.

Following the Parliament’s blessing, the agreement must be approved by the Council. The investment protection agreement must also be ratified by the 27 member states.

07 January 2020

African customers have ordered patrol boats that have been built by Vietnamese shipyards, the country’s Tuổi Trẻ newspaper reported on 2 January.

The story and accompanying video focused on the delivery of 50 patrol boats that had been ordered by an unidentified billionaire and showed several small craft being loaded onto a cargo ship for delivery to Port Harcourt in Nigeria.

More significantly, Tuổi Trẻ also reported that 10 “armoured patrol boats” were awaiting delivery for unidentified African customers and showed them lined up at a location that could be identified as the Hong Ha Shipbuilding Company facility in Haiphong.

The boats appeared to be similar to the 17 m Manta fast patrol boat/interceptor craft made by the Malaysian company Suncraft.

The Manta is also advertised by Vietnam’s Haiphong-based 189 Shipbuilding Company (Z189).

The boats seen at the Hong Ha facility were unarmed but fitted with weapon mounting points in their bow compartments, as well small electro-optical systems made by the US company FLIR.

Vietnam’s economy shines in 2019 but concerns exist for 2020

HANOI (Viet Nam News/ANN) – In 2019, the global economy witnessed a steady deceleration.

Uncertainty and high risks impeded growth momentum as a consequence of geo-political confrontations and a conflict between investment liberalisation and protectionism, not to mention climate change.

Why are some people better able to fight off the flu than others? Part of the answer, according to a new study, is related to the first flu strain we encounter in childhood.

Scientists from UCLA and the University of Arizona have found that people’s ability to fight off the flu virus is determined not only by the subtypes of flu they have had throughout their lives, but also by the sequence in which they are been infected by the viruses. Their study is published in the open-access journal PLoS Pathogens. Tiếp tục đọc “First childhood flu helps explain why virus hits some people harder than others”
