The U.S. media has a Palestine problem

Israeli occupation of Palestine tends to be a touchy subject for news media, so much so that they break journalistic standards and writing etiquette just to avoid implicating one party over another — which still seems to end up working out in Israel’s favor and never Palestine’s. That’s led to a media environment that can’t clearly call out the ethnic cleansing and apartheid inflicted upon Palestinians, doesn’t point to context when talking about the results of decades-long oppression and displacement, and can’t help but equivocate about two disproportionately affected populations. But maybe that’s starting to change.

Sana Saeed looks at what U.S. media coverage has gotten wrong about recent events in Gaza, Sheikh Jarrah and occupied Palestine, and offers her own media critique.

The above video is a collection of extracts from a 1990 town hall meeting, held in New York City and chaired by Ted Koppel of ABC Networks. The meeting formed part Nelson Mandela’s first visit to the USA immediately following his release from prison.

A significant part of the town hall meeting focused on Nelson Mandela’s advocating (on behalf of the African National Congress and the larger South African liberation struggle) for sanctions to be applied against Apartheid South Africa, his and the ANC’s support for the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) as well as his close friendship with Yasser Arafat (of Palestine) and Fidel Castro (of Cuba).

The town hall meeting took place in 1990, long before the world had embraced Nelson Mandela as a “giant of justice”. However, even then, when it may have been unfashionable and unpopular to support the Palestinians against, what Mandela termed, Israeli “colonialism”, Mandela stood firm and resolute on his principles and the policies of the ANC – Mandela was, after all, conveying the long-standing positions held by the ANC and the larger South African liberation movement.

Historical Timeline

1917 – 1947: British mandate

Palestine was among former Ottoman territories placed under UK administration by the League of Nations in 1922. All of these territories eventually became fully independent States, except Palestine, where in addition to “the rendering of administrative assistance and advice” the British Mandate incorporated the “Balfour Declaration” of 1917, expressing support for “the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people”. During the Mandate, from 1922 to 1947, large-scale Jewish immigration, mainly from Eastern Europe took place, the numbers swelling in the 1930s with the Nazi persecution. Arab demands for independence and resistance to immigration led to a rebellion in 1937, followed by continuing terrorism and violence from both sides. UK considered various formulas to bring independence to a land ravaged by violence. In 1947, the UK turned the Palestine problem over to the UN. Read more.

There will be only one winner in the war that has broken out between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas. And it is neither Israel nor Hamas.

In an operation coined “the Al-Aqsa Storm,” Hamas, whose formal name is the Islamic Resistance Movement, fired thousands of rockets into Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad fighters infiltrated Israel by land, sea and air. Hundreds of Israelis have been killed, more than 2,000 injured, and many taken hostage.

Sau 5 năm dài vắng bóng, Mỹ đã chính thức tái gia nhập Tổ chức Văn hóa, Khoa học và Giáo dục của Liên Hợp Quốc (UNESCO) vào ngày 30/6.

Trong một phiên họp bất thường hôm 30/6, 193 quốc gia thành viên của UNESCO đã phê duyệt đề xuất tái gia nhập tổ chức của Mỹ với 132 phiếu thuận và 10 phiếu chống.

Mỹ đã rút khỏi UNESCO vào năm 1984, dưới thời chính quyền Tổng thống Ronald Reagan, sau đó quay trở lại vào năm 2004.

Tuy nhiên, mối quan hệ của chính phủ Mỹ với UNESCO này trở nên căng thẳng vào tháng 10/2011, khi các thành viên của cơ quan này bỏ phiếu chấp nhận Palestine là thành viên của tổ chức.

Generations of Palestinians have called Lebanon home. Many fled here during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.

It has been a struggle for them to survive. But the current level of poverty is unprecedented – the result of one of the worst economic crises in recent history.

The United Nations agency that is supposed to support them has been crippled by a shortage of funds. Children are hungry, and many people are jobless, while others die at sea trying to reach Europe.

Trước năm 1948, không có một đất nước tên là Israel. Tất cả bắt đầu với “Tuyên bố Balfour” của Anh quốc vào năm 1917 trong Thế chiến I khẳng định ủng hộ thành lập một “quê hương cho người Do Thái” ở Palestine.

Có vẻ những nạn nhân của chế độ Quốc xã muốn thế giới bảo đảm với họ một sự đền bù cho những đau khổ của họ. Palestine, khi Bộ trưởng Ngoại giao Anh Arthur Balfour đưa ra tuyên bố mang tên ông, là lãnh thổ thuộc Đế quốc Ottoman.

Đêm của định mệnh ở Jerusalem

TTCT – Ngày thứ bảy, 8-5 vừa qua trong lịch Hồi là ngày cầu nguyện quan trọng nhất thuộc tháng Ramadan, và được gọi là Laylat al Qadr, hay “Đêm của định mệnh”. Đây là đêm trời mở ra và ngay cây cỏ cũng rạp người chào, khiến nhiều trẻ con nghe nói thế cũng ráng thức khuya xem có thật không. Đây cũng là ngày an ninh Israel chọn để tấn công đền Hồi Al Aqsar tại Jerusalem trong khi đang có 80.000 người dự lễ. Lực lượng an ninh bắn lựu đạn cay, trái khói, pháo sáng… khiến 200 người bị thương, phía an ninh có 17 người.

Xin nhắc lại, thời điểm đang là tháng Ramadan, sẽ kết thúc vào ngày 13-5 và bắt đầu bằng Eid al Fitr – một dịp giống như Tết Nguyên đán của ta – với người Hồi có tầm quan trọng cũng như Giáng sinh với người Kitô.

As Israel celebrates the Palestinian Nakba as its triumphant independence on May 1, it is preparing for a massive celebration for the 50th anniversary of its occupation of East Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza.

Two dates are often used to frame the so-called Palestinian-Israeli conflict: Nakba Day on May 15 and Naksa Day on June 5.
