BEIJING —China’s Foreign Ministry says it has lodged repeated complaints with Japan over Tokyo’s criticism of Chinese behavior in the disputed South China Sea, warning Japan not to undermine improving relations between the two Asian rivals.

Both the tone and substance of South China Sea discussions in Australian policy circles has undergone an important shift in recent months. What was previously a second-tier security concern to be watched closely and engaged diplomatically, but at a safe distance, has become a heated discussion about concrete responses. Australian policymakers are as concerned as anyone about China’s breakneck land reclamation in the Spratly Islands and the threats, both legal and military, they pose to the global commons. Australian officials and thinkers are seriously considering options to contest Chinese assertiveness, in tandem with the United States and other partners, which would have seemed distant possibilities a year ago. Lãnh đạo các nước công nghiệp G7 đã bày tỏ sự phản đối mạnh mẽ với việc Trung Quốc cải tạo ồ ạt các đảo nhằm thay đổi hiện trạng ở Biển Đông – Kyodo ngày 8.6 dẫn lời một quan chức Nhật cho biết.

Theo Phó chánh văn phòng Nội các Nhật Hiroshige Seko, tại hội nghị, Thủ tướng Nhật Shinzo Abe đã nhắc tới những hành động của Bắc Kinh ở Biển Đông và Biển Hoa Đông. EAF – The South China Sea dispute has become the new normal in ASEAN meetings. The dispute, with its overlapping claims on various land features in the South China Sea, has started to figure as the most important territorial disputes in Asia, one that risks becoming a major power confrontation in the region. With this in mind, ASEAN must take a collective stand on the South China Sea.

The Maritime Security Implications of the New U.S.-Japan Guidelines

The new U.S.-Japan Defense Guidelines will upgrade bilateral operational cooperation and enhance the alliance structure. The new Guidelines enable Japanese and U.S. forces to conduct effective combined operations defending each other’s units and assets in the high seas—even beyond Japanese territorial waters. The new Alliance Coordination Mechanism will endorse this upgraded operational cooperation. Under this new Mechanism, the Japan Self-Defense Force (JSDF) and U.S. military will share information and situational awareness from peacetime to gray-zone and full-fledged military contingencies, while coordinating bilateral responses.
