  • In recent decades, rich tropical forests of the Greater Mekong region have been steadily depleted by the world’s growing appetite for timber.
  • Recognizing the impact of the timber trade on natural forests, governments in the Greater Mekong region have come up with laws to regulate logging and timber exports.
  • However, insufficient political will and collusion between officials, businesspeople and criminal groups means enforcement is often limited.
  • There is a clear need to strengthen local laws and enforcement, but pressure from foreign governments, businesses and consumers can help.

The man behind a ring that managed to illegally fell down and transport a large amount of logs with impunity in Vietnam’s Central Highlands has been arrested, along with several members of the racket, police said on Friday.

Ringleader Phan Huu Phuong, 48, was nabbed and taken into custody after police raided his residence in Ea T’Linh, a town in Cu Jut District, Dak Nong Province.

Phuong and some of his ring members are being investigated for their involvement in serious illegal logging activities at the local Yok Don National Park, located at the border of Vietnam and Cambodia, according to police.

Police come and arrest Pham Huu Phuong at his residence.

During Friday’s raid, officers also confiscated 37 cubic meters of illegally logged timber, stored inside two trucks, at a workshop owned by Phuong, and various logging tools and piles of logs at an illegal logging site inside the park.

Phuong had managed to take the illegal logs out of the national part without impunity, even though he had to pass several check points run by the local border guard and forest ranger units.

Police thus hold suspicion that the ring had been abetted by local authorities.

The Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security has sent a team of officers to help local police in further investigation of the case.

Cambodia’s forests are being felled at a shocking rate, as poachers and corrupt officials profit from the black market trade in rare wood species, which is being exported to Vietnam — and beyond.

The Aoral Wildlife Sanctuary in Kampong Speu province is just a three-hour drive from Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh. But the scenery here couldn’t be more different than in the sprawling metropolis — even a military outpost in the reserve is peaceful and picturesque. A traditional stilt house has hammocks, chickens and ice-cold beer. Outside, a few soldiers are playing pétanque as a black pig snuffles the earth.

But behind this idyllic scene in the Cardamom Mountains, a billion-dollar black market is thriving. Tiếp tục đọc “Corruption fueling deforestation in Cambodia: poachers and corrupt officials profit from the black market trade, being exported to Vietnam — and beyond.”

Illegal logging destroying Cuc Phuong National Park

Last update 16:30 | 23/11/2017
Illegal logging is rampant at Cuc Phuong National Park despite “the best” efforts of forest rangers.

Cuc Phuong National Park spreads across three northern provinces of Ninh Binh, Hoa Binh and Thanh Hoa, covering over 22,000 hectares. It is the first national park in Vietnam, is rich in biodiversity and home to many endangered animals.

However, in the past months, parts of the park in Thanh Yen Commune, Thanh Hoa Province have been destroyed by illegal loggers. Near the forest edge, huge trees were chopped down and next to them is a timber cutting site. The loggers chose random locations that are hundreds of metres away from each other to take down the trees in order to avoid the forest rangers. Corrupt Vietnam Gov’t officials cashing in on massive timber theft from Cambodia

LONDON: Corrupt Government officials and military personnel in Vietnam are complicit in smuggling huge quantities of illegal timber from Cambodia, a new report reveals.

The revelations are featured in the new report ‘Repeat Offender: Vietnam’s persistent trade in illegal timberPDF from the London-based Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA), released just days before Vietnam and the European Union (EU) are due initial an agreement seeking to ensure only legal timber is exported from Vietnam. This is a hard, tough and durable wood with no termites, even if it is buried underground. Tay and Nung ethnic minorities like using nghien wood to make columns of houses and floors. Walking on nghien-made floors never produces creaking. Nghien-made chopping boards are favored, because the knife cuts are clean won’t leave debris.
