China forgets who was the real aggressor in Korean War

China forgets who was the real aggressor in Korean War

Voice of America – 9-8-2022

July 27 marked the 69th anniversary of the signing the Korean War armistice between military commanders from the U.S.-led United Nations forces, North Korea and China.

During the 1950-1953 war on the peninsula, the People’s Republic of China backed North Korea with help from the Soviet Union, while U.S.-led U.N. forces defended South Korea.

The armistice, which South Korea refused to sign, brought a cease-fire in lieu of a peace deal ending the war. Tensions have remained high between the two Koreas ever since. Tiếp tục đọc “China forgets who was the real aggressor in Korean War”

Punishing measures are in ‘violent violation’ of North’s sovereignty, Pyongyang says, as it rejects offers of talks.

North Korea has come out fighting following fresh UN Security Council sanctions on Pyongyang and after the United States and South Korea celebrated the punishing measures.

North Korea on Monday condemned the sanctions imposed in response to its weapons programmes, saying it would not negotiate over nuclear arms while threatened by the US.

The sanctions passed at the weekend were a “violent violation of our sovereignty”, Pyongyang said in a statement carried by its official Korean Central News Agency, adding it would take “righteous action” in return.

China backs UN sanctions on North Korea as ASEAN summit held

“We will not put our self-defensive nuclear deterrent on the negotiating table” while it faced threats from Washington, it said, “and will never take a single step back from strengthening our nuclear might”.

The UN Security Council unanimously adopted on Saturday a US-led resolution, which bans mineral and seafood exports from North Korea worth more than $1bn.

The triggering event late July, North Korea’s latest test of ballistic missiles, had the international community and experts concerned. Along with the North Korean government, they say the missiles can reach different parts of the US.

China’s UN envoy has said it is primarily up to the United States and North Korea, not Beijing, to reduce tensions and work towards resuming talks to end Pyongyang’s nuclear weapon and ballistic missile programmes.

Liu Jieyi’s remark came on Monday after US President Donald Trump said on Saturday he was “very disappointed” China had done “nothing” for Washington with regards to North Korea who a day earlier conducted its second test this month of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).

Jieyi said “[the US and North Korea] hold the primary responsibility to keep things moving, to start moving in the right direction, not China”.

“No matter how capable China is, China’s efforts will not yield practical results because it depends on the two principal parties,” Liu said, speaking at a news conference marking the end of Beijing’s presidency of the UN Security Council in July. China says ‘China responsibility theory’ on North Korea has to stop

China hit back on Tuesday in unusually strong terms at repeated calls from the United States to put more pressure on North Korea, urging a halt to what it called the “China responsibility theory”, and saying all parties needed to pull their weight.

U.S President Trump took a more conciliatory tone at a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday, but he has expressed some impatience that China, with its close economic and diplomatic ties to Pyongyang, is not doing enough to rein in North Korea. US deploys missile defence system to South Korea

Al Jazeera

China is warning it will take measures against a US missile defence system deployed in South Korea, with the stated objective of countering threats from North Korea.

The equipment needed to set up Terminal High-Altitude Area Defence system (THAAD), a missile defence system, have arrived in South Korea, according to American and South Korean defence forces.

The deployment announcement was made on Tuesday, a day after North Korea test-launched four ballistic missiles into the sea near Japan.

Admiral Harry Harris, head of the US Pacific Command, said in the statement that “continued provocative actions by North Korea, to include yesterday’s launch of multiple missiles, only confirm the prudence of our alliance decision last year to deploy THAAD to South Korea”.
