Three Vietnamese destinations receive ASEAN Clean Tourist City Awards

Hue, Vung Tau, and Quy Nhon have been awarded the ASEAN Clean Tourist City Awards 2024, recognized for their commitment to cleanliness, managing waste, and promoting environmental awareness.

The award ceremony is part of the ASEAN Tourism Forum 2024, held in the Laos capital Vientiane, from Jan. 22 – 27.

These three destinations have been honored with the ASEAN Clean Tourism City award before. Quy Nhon earned the award in 2020, while Vung Tau and Hue have each claimed the award three times previously.

Vietnamese brewers saw their profits dropping double-digit last year as authorities tightened control on drunk driving.

Hanoi Beer brewer Habeco saw post-tax profit plunging 30% last year to VND355 billion (US$14.5 million), the lowest non-pandemic year since 2008.

Kinh tế Sài Gòn Online – Việt Nam đang bước vào thị trường cảng trung chuyển container quốc tế trong khu vực châu Á, thị trường có tính cạnh tranh được đánh giá là rất khốc liệt.

Trong tháng 12-2023, Bộ Giao thông Vận tải (GTVT) đã trình Thủ tướng Chính phủ phê duyệt điều chỉnh Quy hoạch tổng thể phát triển hệ thống cảng biển Việt Nam thời kỳ 2021-2030, tầm nhìn đến năm 2050. Trong đó, Bộ GTVT điều chỉnh quy hoạch ưu tiên phát triển cảng trung chuyển quốc tế Cần Giờ (TPHCM) theo Nghị quyết 81/2023 của Quốc hội đồng thời đề xuất điều chỉnh bổ sung cảng biển TPHCM quy hoạch tiềm năng thành cảng biển đặc biệt. Tổng công suất hàng hóa thông qua dự kiến đạt 4,8 triệu TEU cho giai đoạn 1 (dự kiến năm 2027) và 16,9 triệu TEU khi hoàn thiện (dự kiến năm 2040).

Changes to law to simplify home buying by overseas Vietnamese

Amendments to the Land Law that will take effect next year are set to make it easier for overseas Vietnamese to buy properties in the country.

Overseas Vietnamese, or Viet Kieu, who do not have citizenship will get exactly the same rights as Vietnamese citizens when the changes take effect in 2025.

The revised law will allow overseas Vietnamese to buy and rent houses that come with land, obtain land-use rights at housing projects and inherit residential and other types of lands adjoining houses.

Labor ministry calls for Vietnamese in Romania to get their acts together

Certain Vietnamese in Romania are committing illegal acts, including gambling and illegal residence, tarnishing their reputation, the labor ministry said.

In a document recently sent to businesses who have workers in Romania, the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs has called for behaviors like drinking, gambling and the illegal residence of Vietnamese workers in Romania to stop. Romania is a potential market with high demand for foreign workers, including Vietnamese, the ministry added.

Previously on Jan. 20, upon a visit to the Vietnamese Embassy in Romania as part of his trip in Europe, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh asked for a check-up on companies sending workers overseas after hearing about issues from the Vietnamese community abroad.

Vu Minh Duc, head of the Teacher and Education Management Officials Department under the Ministry of Education and Training, said Tuesday that the program, which was introduced last month, aims to improve the quality of language teaching and learning in Vietnam.

Teachers at foreign language centers who must participate in this program include native English speakers, foreigners with an associate degree in English, or an associate degree along with a foreign language proficiency certificate of level 5 or higher according to the six-level foreign language competency framework used in Vietnam or equivalent.

Tet gifts for workers come with credit card requirement

Workers at several unions have been told they will receive Tet gifts worth VND300,000 ($12), under the condition that they open a credit card with a finance firm.

Earlier this month, Tuan, president of a workers’ union in Dong Nai Province, received 150 Tet gifts, each worth around VND300,000, from the General Confederation of Labor.

However, instead of cash, transactions or physical products, workers were required to open an account at the HD Saison financial company, fill in information, download the app and open a credit card with a VND5 million limit. Workers were instructed to purchase products on e-commerce platforms, Tuan added.

JERUSALEM (AP) — The U.N. world court on Friday came down hard on Israel’s war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip, calling on Israel to “take all measures” to prevent a genocide of the Palestinians. But it stopped short of demanding an immediate cease-fire, as the South African sponsors of the case had hoped.

All sides tried to claim victory with the ruling, seizing on different elements that buttressed their positions.

Climate Change Is Main Driver of Historic Amazon River Drought, Study Finds

The months-long drought – a 1 in 100 years event – has dried up large parts of the Amazon River, with water levels at their lowest in more than a century.

Climate change is the main driver behind the exceptional drought that has been affecting the Amazon River since mid-2023, with the return of El Niño further exacerbating the situation, new research suggests.

A group of scientists from the World Weather Attribution (WWA) group used published peer-reviewed methods to assess the role of climate change and El Niño in influencing the drought, which is affecting an estimated 30 million people that rely on the river for transport, food, and power. They found that climate change-driven high temperatures were the main driver of the historic drought – a 1 in 100 year event on the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI). On the other hand, the El Niño – a phenomenon that warms the Pacific Ocean and historically a driver of drought – had a “much smaller influence.”

 Belarusian propaganda positions the EU as its main enemy, but several other features make it a unique case among its European neighbours.

The most important and, at the same time, the most destructive peculiarity of disinformation in Belarus is strong Russian influence, which has deep historical roots and covers various spheres, from economy and culture to the military sector.

However, nowadays, Russian propaganda is helped by Belarusian colleagues who work to follow the same narrative.

This narrative includes turning EU countries into an economically and politically unstable military threat in the eyes of Belarusians while ignoring benefits and positives.
