HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam requests the US to continue implementing its commitment to broad, strong and constructive coordination and to soon recognise the market economy status of Việt Nam, Spokeswoman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Phạm Thu Hằng has said.
Hằng made the statement on August 3 while answering a reporter’s question about Việt Nam’s reaction to the US Department of Commerce (DOC)’s decision on continuing to identify Việt Nam as a non-market economy.
An expert said earthquakes in Kon Tum are expected to continue and affect densely populated areas and key infrastructure, especially near the epicentre.

KON TUM – A total of 83 earthquakes occurred in July, with 82 reported in Kon Plong District, Kon Tum Province, the Institute of Geophysics under the Việt Nam Academy of Science and Technology announced on Thursday.
Only one earthquake was recorded in Ngọc Lạc District in Thanh Hoá Province. Most of the earthquakes ranged in magnitude from 2.5 to 5.0.
The World Bank has recommended that Vietnam consider implementing a 155% special consumption tax on alcoholic beverages in response to the rising number of alcohol-related deaths and illnesses.
The bank has proposed to the Ministry of Finance that an absolute tax of VND16,500 ($0.65) per liter of alcohol be applied in addition to the existing 65% tax per product, according to a consultancy report.

A series of these photographs is featured in the book “Urban Architecture and Landscape of Saigon – Cho Lon (a Saigon neighbourhood with a heavy Chinese influence) Past and Present,” published by the HCMC General Publishing House in July. The work, by Nguyen Duc Hiep, Tim Doling and Vo Chi Mai, includes images gathered from magazines and other sources from the early 20th century. The authors, who have extensively studied the history and culture of the city and have served as cultural advisors to UNESCO, have previously released several publications about the Saigon – Gia Dinh – Cho Lon area.

Tội phạm mua bán người là một trong những loại tội phạm xâm hại nghiêm trọng nhất đến quyền con người. Tình trạng mua bán người vẫn đang là vấn đề “nóng”, gây nhức nhối trên toàn cầu.
Được mô tả như một “nô lệ thời hiện đại”, nạn nhân của tội phạm này thường rơi vào các tình trạng bị bóc lột tình dục, lao động cưỡng bức, lừa đảo… Tội phạm mua bán người không chỉ hủy hoại cuộc sống của nạn nhân mà còn tác động tiêu cực đến sự phát triển về kinh tế, văn hóa, trật tự, an toàn xã hội của mỗi quốc gia.
Trong cuộc chiến chống lại tội phạm mua bán người, Việt Nam đã chứng minh nỗ lực của mình bằng những cam kết mạnh mẽ thông qua việc áp dụng điều ước quốc tế, tăng cường hợp tác quốc tế, các hoạt động nâng cao nhận thức của người dân về tội phạm mua bán người.
Tuy nhiên, tình hình tội phạm mua bán người ở Việt Nam trong thời gian gần đây tiếp tục diễn biến phức tạp, nhiều vụ nạn nhân bị mua bán ra nước ngoài, bị khống chế bóc lột tình dục, cưỡng bức lao động, lừa đảo, cưỡng đoạt, cướp tài sản, có trường hợp dẫn đến chết người, gây ảnh hưởng xấu đến tình hình an ninh chính trị, trật tự an toàn xã hội.

Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has left many major legacies with a consistent stance: Making people a focus to serve for his entire life and career.
Trong joined the ranks of the Communist Party of Vietnam when he was a 23-year-old who just graduated from the Literature major of Hanoi General University. For 60 years ever since, he had contributed himself entirely to the causes of the Party and the people, with a lasting ambition to build a socialist state ruled by law, of the people, by the people and for the people.
That ideal followed him until even his final days. At the age of 80, Trong had been simultaneously handling the workload of the Party and receiving health treatment at the 108 Military Central Hospital, where he passed away at 1:38 p.m. on July 19.
“Trong’s consistent ideal was the people, to serve people to the best of one’s ability, to make people the focus in efforts for change,” President To Lam wrote in an article on Trong’s life.
Over his 57 years of dedication, Trong spent over 13 of them being the Party General Secretary, nearly three years being the state president, and two terms of being the National Assembly chairman. Trong left his marks on all aspects: politics, diplomacy and culture, and has become a model of a humble lifestyle for future generations of Party members and the people.
