Universities have removed books from reading lists to protect students from “challenging” content, an investigation has found.

Essex and Sussex admitted removing texts from study lists after freedom of information (FOI) requests were issued to 140 UK universities by The Times.

The universities are thought to be the first in the UK that have purged books altogether.

China on campus

China on campus | 101 East

Al Jazeera English – 13-2-2020

Australia’s universities are embroiled in a growing geopolitical storm.

In recent months, pro and anti-Beijing groups have clashed on campuses amid rising concerns over the Chinese government’s expanding power abroad.

Universities earn billions of dollars a year from student fees and research collaborations with China, but there are growing fears these lucrative arrangements may be putting academic institutions, and even national security, at risk.

As government ministers warn that the country faces an “unprecedented level of threat” from foreign interference, 101 East investigates the infiltration of Australia’s universities by Beijing.

Cambodia’s orphan business: The dark side of ‘voluntourism’ | REWIND

Al Jazeera English – 15-9-2019

After emerging from more than two decades of war in the 1990s, Cambodia has relied heavily on tourism to rebuild its economy.

It is one of the top destinations for young travellers, many of whom sign up with global volunteering companies.

‘Voluntourists’, however, may be unwittingly fuelling the exploitation of children in poorly regulated orphanages. Tiếp tục đọc “Cambodia’s orphan business: The dark side of ‘voluntourism’”

Are small modular reactors the solution to growing energy and climate problems?

Download study: Small Modular Reactors: The Next Phase for Nuclear Power in the Indo-Pacific?

By David Santoro and Carl Baker

David Santoro (david@pacforum.org) and Carl Baker (carl@pacforum.org) are respectively President/CEO and Senior Advisor at the Pacific Forum. Follow David Santoro on Twitter @DavidSantoro1.

The increasingly dominant view in the energy expert community is that nuclear power has a role to play in achieving the 17 “sustainable devaelopment goals” identified by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015 (and intended to be reached by 2030). There has thus been rising interest in nuclear power development in several parts of the world, especially in the Indo-Pacific, where growth is the strongest.

This renewed interest comes not long after the failed “nuclear renaissance” of the 2000s. That renaissance never materialized primarily because the devastating accidents at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in 2011 led many countries to reconsider their nuclear power ambitions. Now, however, national energy and climate objectives are again driving these same countries to put the nuclear option back on the table. This interest has only grown in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the subsequent efforts to choke off Russian natural gas and oil exports, and the resulting increase in global prices for fossil fuels.

The Cyprus Papers | Al Jazeera Investigations

Al Jazeera English – 23-8-2020

A satirical look at the dubious characters and state officials who buy nationality as if it’s a luxury car. Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit obtained a leak of documents that we’re calling The Cyprus Papers.

If you can afford $2.5 million to purchase a passport to Europe, then you’re probably already on someone’s rich list with at least a Porsche in the garage. The leak reveals 2,500 people who paid to become new citizens of Cyprus with the added perk of be able to live and work anywhere from Milan to Monte Carlo.

So who’s on the list? Among the names in The Cyprus Papers are convicted criminals, men on the run and political figures regarded as a high-risk for dirty money.

Cuối phần viết về nhân vật Mạnh Thường Quân, Tư Mã Thiên  nói: (tạm dịch) “Tôi thường qua đất Tiết, thấy phong tục thôn xóm phần đông con em theo thói hung bạo, khác hẳn đất Trâu đất Lỗ. Hỏi thì nghe nói rằng: ‘Mạnh Thường Quân  kéo bọn hiệp khách, bọn gian manh khắp thiên hạ về ở đây hơn sáu vạn nhà, nên nó vậy’. Thế gian truyền tụng Mạnh Thường Quân hiếu khách, thiệt là không ngoa” (Sử Ký, quyển 75, Mạnh Thường Quân liệt truyện).

Massive dark money windfall: New conservative group got $1.6 billion from single donor

By Casey TolanCurt Devine and Drew Griffin, CNN

Updated 2145 GMT (0545 HKT) August 22, 2022

[TĐH: The title “US Dark Money Politics” is my addition]

(CNN)A new group led by a prominent conservative lawyer has received $1.6 billion from one donor — the largest single contribution to a politically focused nonprofit that’s ever been made public, and a fortune that could be used to fuel right-wing interests.

The nonprofit, Marble Freedom Trust, received the contribution in the form of stock and then funneled more than $200 million to other conservative organizations last year, a tax form CNN obtained from the IRS shows.

Marble Freedom is led by Leonard Leo, the co-chairman of the conservative Federalist Society, who advised former President Donald Trump on his Supreme Court picks and runs a sprawling network of other right-wing nonprofits that don’t disclose their donors, which are often referred to as dark money groups.

Moscow fuels Myanmar war machine, then claims to bring peace

Moscow fuels Myanmar war machine, then claims to bring peace

Voice of America – 20-8-2022

On August 3, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made an official visit to Myanmar, underscoring Russia’s support for the country’s military government.

The visit came just over a week after Myanmar’s military junta announced it had executed four pro-democracy activists – the country’s first executions in decades – sparking international condemnation.

Myanmar has spiraled into chaos since February 2021, when the military seized power by force from the elected government.

As of August 5, the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, run by Myanmar citizens in exile, said 2,158 “people, pro-democracy activists and other civilians” have been killed as a result of the post-coup military crackdown.

Lavrov said Russia stood in solidarity with “efforts to stabilize the situation in the country” and welcomed planned elections next year. Analysts say the elections will be used to install a pro-military government.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova weighed in on what she described as Lavrov’s “rich visit.” In reference to U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s recent trip to Taiwan, Zakharova said Lavrov visited “to promote cooperation,” rather than provoke China.

“Russia brings cooperation, peace, [and] stability to the region. Russia operates based on international law, mutual respect and the mutual consideration of interests,” Russian state broadcaster Sputnik quoted Zakharova as saying.

That is false. Russia, as a major supplier of arms to Myanmar’s military government, is doing anything but bringing peace and stability to the region.

How inflation is flipping the economic script, in seven charts

The troubling trend is spilling over into every corner of the global economy, with dramatic effects. McKinsey Global Publishing looks at the latest data.

Every morning a new headline underscores growing economic concerns: Highest inflation since the 1970s. Central banks aggressively raising rates. Consumer sentiment at record lows. Commodity prices near all-time highs. Clearly inflation has, at a minimum, altered the economic mood, and potentially reset the path of global and national economies worldwide for years to come. McKinsey’s experts have examined many of the strategic implications of inflation. Here, we use the best and most recent publicly available data to offer seven charts illustrating inflation’s insidious progress

.

Double trouble. In the past six months, inflation has far exceeded December 2021 expectations. In many countries, actual rates have doubled projections. European countries are particularly affected. For example, inflation in Lithuania is running at 15.5 percent annually, nearly five times the rate expected. Poland is at 11 percent and the United Kingdom at 9 percent, both well above projections. At 3 percent, Switzerland is an outlier. Asia is seeing a less severe change: Indian inflation is about 7 percent, only a bit above projections; and South Korea is at 5 percent. In China and Japan, inflation remains muted.
