Highlights

  • Viet Nam’s Deputy Foreign Minister, during his keynote speech at the 34th regular session of the Human Rights Council panel discussion on Climate Change and Child Rights on 2 March 2017 in Geneva, highlighted the country’s successful cooperation with UNICEF during the ongoing emergency response and on childcentred disaster risk reduction (DRR) in Viet Nam. The statement generated significant interest and discussion among participants, including representatives from ASEAN countries.
  • The emergency nutrition intervention is in its final phase of implementation. In bridging the gap between humanitarian assistance and subsequent development interventions, National Guidelines and a National Plan on Emergency Nutrition Preparedness and Response is being developed. A workshop was conducted on 7-8 March with national and provincial level partners to learn key lessons from the on-going emergency nutrition response and inform content of the guidelines and plan.
  • A child-centred DRR partnership framework between the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) and UNICEF is being finalized to solidify long-term cooperation on the issue in Viet Nam.

White House Seeks to Cut Billions in Funding for United Nations

State Department staffers have been instructed to seek cuts in excess of 50 percent in U.S. funding for U.N. programs, signaling an unprecedented retreat by President Donald Trump’s administration from international operations that keep the peace, provide vaccines for children, monitor rogue nuclear weapons programs, and promote peace talks from Syria to Yemen, according to three sources.

The push for such draconian measures comes as the White House is scheduled on Thursday to release its 2018 budget proposal, which is expected to include cuts of up to 37 percent for spending on the State Department, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and other foreign assistance programs, including the U.N., in next year’s budget. US rebuffs China over North Korea talks

UNITED NATIONS: The United States on Wednesday (Mar 8) rebuffed China’s appeal for talks with North Korea, saying leader Kim Jong-Un was behaving irrationally and that it was reassessing its approach to dealing with Pyongyang.

China, Pyongyang’s main ally, earlier called on North Korea to suspend its nuclear and missile activities in exchange for a halt to the annual US-South Korean military drills.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in Beijing that the proposal could help bring the United States and North Korea back to negotiations and avert what he termed a “head-on collision”.

US, South Korea and Japan discuss sanctions on Pyongyang

WASHINGTON: Senior US, South Korean and Japanese officials met on Monday (Feb 27) to discuss how better to enforce international sanctions against North Korea’s nuclear weapon and ballistic missile programmes. The Washington talks came shortly after United Nations experts warned that Pyongyang has been flouting existing sanctions, and just as China’s top diplomat held talks at the White House.

US special representative for North Korea policy Joseph Yun met senior Japanese diplomat Kenji Kanasugi and South Korea’s special representative Kim Hong-kyun at the State Department.

UNITED NATIONS – The U.N. Security Council strongly condemned North Korea late Monday over its latest ballistic missile launches and warned of “further significant measures” if Pyongyang doesn’t stop nuclear and missile testing.

A council statement agreed to by all 15 members followed strong condemnation by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres of the latest launch and U.S. President Donald Trump’s pledge to deal with North Korea “very strongly.”

The Security Council condemned Saturday’s launch and a previous test Oct. 19, saying North Korea’s activities to develop its nuclear weapons delivery systems violate U.N. sanctions and increase tensions. It called on all U.N. members “to redouble their efforts” to implement U.N. sanctions.

North Korea has repeatedly flouted six Security Council resolutions demanding an end to its nuclear and ballistic missile activities and imposing increasingly tougher sanctions.
