A shocked international community has condemned North Korea after it launched four ballistic missiles on Monday morning, three of which fell into Japanese waters.

SEOUL: North Korea fired multiple missiles from its Tongchang-ri region, where a missile base is located, early on Monday (Mar 6), South Korea’s military said.

The missiles – fired from the country’s east coast – flew 1,000km, the military added.

Tongchang-ri is near the North’s border with China, where the isolated state fired a long-range rocket last year that put an object into orbit and was condemned by the United Nations for violating resolutions that ban the use of missile technology.

Malaysia has declared North Korea’s ambassador persona non grata over the alleged murder of the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un‘s half-brother and ordered the diplomat to leave the country within the next 48 hours.

Kang Chol’s expulsion came on Saturday, just weeks after Kim Jong-nam was allegedly poisoned at Kuala Lumpur airport on February 13.

“The expulsion of the DPRK [North Korea] ambassador is… an indication of the government’s concern that Malaysia may have been used for illegal activities,” Malaysia’s foreign ministry said in a statement.

Under heavy security, Indonesian and Vietnamese nationals formally charged with murder and now face death penalty.

Two women were charged on Wednesday with the murder of Kim Jong-nam, the half-brother of North Korea’s leader, after his assassination by a liquid chemical weapon at a Malaysian airport.

Indonesian Siti Aisyah, 25, and Doan Thi Huong, 28, from Vietnam, were surrounded by a heavy police presence as they were charged in a Kuala Lumpur court over the February 13 killing.

Siti, wearing a red T-shirt, was brought in first to hear the murder charge read out before being taken away. Huong, also dressed casually, then heard the charge in Vietnamese.

US, South Korea and Japan discuss sanctions on Pyongyang

WASHINGTON: Senior US, South Korean and Japanese officials met on Monday (Feb 27) to discuss how better to enforce international sanctions against North Korea’s nuclear weapon and ballistic missile programmes. The Washington talks came shortly after United Nations experts warned that Pyongyang has been flouting existing sanctions, and just as China’s top diplomat held talks at the White House.

US special representative for North Korea policy Joseph Yun met senior Japanese diplomat Kenji Kanasugi and South Korea’s special representative Kim Hong-kyun at the State Department.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Indonesian citizen detained in Malaysia in connection with the alleged assassination of Kim Jong Nam has maintained that she was duped into committing the act, believing that she was part of a prank on a TV show.

This was according to Indonesia’s Deputy Ambassador to Malaysia, Andriano Erwin, on Saturday (Feb 25), after a 30-minute meeting with Siti Aisyah.

Malaysian police say a preliminary report shows the murder of Kim Jong-nam, the half brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, was carried out with a nerve agent used in chemical warfare.

A statement on Friday from the inspector general of police said that a preliminary analysis from the Chemistry Department of Malaysia identified the agent at “VX nerve agent”.

KUALA LUMPUR – North Korea had few friends even before the assassination of the leader’s half brother at a Kuala Lumpur airport last week, but the fallout from the killing looks set to further isolate the nuclear-armed state.

Pyongyang and Kuala Lumpur have enjoyed relatively warm economic ties, with some bilateral trade and citizens from both countries entitled to travel to the other under a unique reciprocal visa-free deal.

The Vietnamese woman suspected of helping to kill the North Korean leader’s half-brother was a keen singer whose Facebook pages featured pouting portraits and pictures of parties.

Four days before Kim Jong Nam was killed at a Malaysian airport, she appears to have posted a picture of herself wearing a shirt emblazoned with the acronym “LOL”, similar to the one on the fleeing suspect caught on CCTV cameras.

The apparent assassination of the North Korean leader’s estranged half-brother is strengthening bipartisan calls for the US to relist North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism, a designation lifted nine years ago. Doing so would increase the country’s isolation, while potentially complicating any future diplomacy to halt its nuclear and missile programs.

The US kept North Korea on its terrorism blacklist for two decades after the 1987 bombing of a South Korean airliner killed 115 people. But President George W Bush lifted the designation in 2008 to smooth the way for aid-for-disarmament negotiations. Malaysian police have arrested a fourth suspect believed to be linked to the death of Kim Jong-nam, half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

According to a statement by Malaysian police on Saturday, the suspect was arrested a day earlier in Selangor state and was identified as 47-year-old Ri Jong-chol from North Korea.
