Hiện nay, Cà Mau đang bước vào cao điểm mùa khô. Nắng hạn gay gắt đã khiến cho nhiều diện tích đất sản xuất nông nghiệp bị ảnh hưởng, giảm năng suất, chất lượng, thu nhập của nông dân cũng sụt giảm. Tuy nhiên, tại xã Khánh An, huyện U Minh, mô hình trồng bồn bồn vẫn đang phát triển tốt, cho năng suất cao, mang về nguồn thu nhập ổn định cho người dân.

Bồn bồn là loại thực vật sống ở vùng ngập nước, phát triển rất tốt trên vùng đất U Minh.

Gia đình bà Lê Thị Chung ở Ấp 1, xã Khánh An là một trong những hộ tiên phong thực hiện mô hình trồng bồn bồn hơn 6 năm nay. Với diện tích 3 ha, mỗi tháng bà Chung thu hoạch từ 3,5-4 tấn bồn bồn, bán cho thương lái với giá từ 22.000-25.000 đồng/kg. Sau khi trừ chi phí, bà Chung còn thu nhập hơn 50 triệu đồng. “Paddy is our life, but many people don’t want us to grow paddy anymore,” laments Pham Van Tuan, a rice farmer in Can Tho province of Vietnam. “Big people from Ho Chi Minh City say that our paddy is causing climate change and water scarcity in the world.”

Paddy cultivation emits over 10 percent of global agricultural greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and consumes 21 percent of the total water volume used for global crop production.  Water is increasingly scarce in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta, which has been hit by record droughts in recent years. Solutions that help farmers like Pham Van Tuan to grow rice while drastically reducing GHG emission and water usage would be a game-changer for the Mekong Delta. Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) is one such practice where rice fields are alternately flooded and dried, and water levels kept low during the flooded stage. This irrigation practice reduces water use up to 28 percent and methane emissions up to 48 percent. With such immense benefits, one would expect that this practice is applied far and wide. A photo capturing a Hanoi apartment block festooned in red flags to support Vietnam’s Covid-19 fight and those on the frontline, has gone viral.

The image, shot by Indian lecturer Prabu Mohan last Sunday, was posted on the Facebook community Hanoi Massive, frequented by 136,000 expat and local netizens living in the capital.

Over a hundred Vietnamese flags were hung from the balconies of an apartment building on Tam Trinh Street in Hoang Mai District, garnering thousands of Facebook likes and shares.

“One of the ways to show your support in difficult times,” Mohan wrote in the caption.

The poor look out for peers in Covid-19 times

At many donation distribution sites in Vietnam, poor people crippled by Covid-19 are thankful and won’t take more than they need.

Last Friday afternoon, two women walked to a charity booth at 420 Lac Long Quan Street in Hanoi.

One of them took the donated food items and walked off immediately.

The other, a slim woman in her mid-thirties, hesitated after receiving her gift pack.

She stood silently for a while, an envelope in her hand. After she’d gathered enough courage, she walked towards Dao Tuan Hung, who was managing the booth. She pressed the envelope into his hand.

“I immediately told her it was a free present, but she said that it was not money. She left quickly after giving me the envelope,” Hung said.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

“Dear ladies and gentlemen.

I have been an unemployed worker since the Covid-19 disease hit the country, the people and the government’s 16th decree (national social distancing campaign) to ensure the lives of people and the community. I sold things for a living but had to stop and paying rent has become difficult. I came across Lac Long Quan Street and found this place which distributes rice and noodles.

  • Indonesia and the Philippines account for most of the world’s coconut production. But as the palm oil industry expands, helped along by generous government subsidies, coconut farmers are struggling to adapt.
  • In 2010, palm oil overtook coconut oil as the top-selling oil in most Philippine grocery stores. Most of it was imported from Indonesia or Malaysia, but now the Philippines is trying increase its own production.
  • Oil palm is a much more industrialized crop than coconut, which is dominated by smallholders. But while the low price of palm oil has given it an advantage, demand has risen for high-quality coconut products due to health and sustainability concerns.
  • Some coconut farmers say they need the same kind of support from the government that palm oil companies get if they are going to survive.

5am – I land at Hanoi’s Noi Bai airport with hopes of a new life in my favourite country. I finally made it. As we leave the plane, we’re greeted with barriers and must complete health declarations. People are being swabbed and staff are wearing protective clothing. It’s all very real now. It’s no longer a headline.

Each of us must wait to be swabbed and give up our passports. Suddenly I’m grateful I filled in the online declaration and skipped the queue. I’m met with more forms, more confusion. Finally they take swab samples from my throat and nose and I’m gestured to sit in a specific area.

I look back at the slow moving queue. Westerners, Vietnamese, each of them waiting. As the hours pass, unrest grows and none of us are given information. A nearby elderly holiday group complains but it becomes increasingly evident that it’s not just us who are confused – the staff aren’t sure what to do with us. I realise that somewhere, someone is having a meeting about where to send us.

CÀ MAU – Âu thuyền Tắc Thủ và cống Cà Mau là hai công trình thủy lợi được đầu tư hơn trăm tỷ đồng nhưng không phát huy hiệu quả, hiện bỏ hoang.

Âu thuyền Tắc Thủ được khởi công năm 2001, khánh thành năm 2005, do Bộ Giao thông Vận tải làm chủ đầu tư, với gần 80 tỷ đồng. Dự án đặt tại ngã ba sông Ông Đốc – Cái Tàu – Sông Trẹm, thuộc xã Hồ Thị Kỷ (huyện Thới Bình) và xã Khánh An (huyện U Minh).
