Seven ministries and more than 100 Vietnamese and foreign scientists spent 84 days and nights to trace down the culprit which caused the mass fish death catastrophe. The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment (MONRE) finally gathered enough evidence to force Formosa Ha Tinh, the steel complex developer from Taiwan, to admit its behavior of discharging untreated waste water which caused mass fish deaths and serious pollution to coastal areas.

The mass fish death was raising public concern while another scandal was discovered. The Ky Anh Urban Environment Management & Construction Company was caught landfilling waste sludge, which was hazardous waste from Formosa. Tiếp tục đọc “Vietnam struggles with environmental crimes”

Al Jazeera Investigative Unit’s report raises questions about Vietnam’s commitment to tackle wildlife trafficking.

14 November 2016

Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit has uncovered evidence that Vietnam is still a major market for illegal wildlife products, despite Hanoi’s stated commitment that it is tackling the issue.

The investigation comes a few days before the Southeast Asian nation hosts an international conference on stopping the illicit trade.

On Saturday, Vietnamese authorities in the capital ground down and burned two tonnes of ivory and 70kg of rhino – all seized from smugglers –  in a symbolic move designed to show the government’s commitment to thwarting wildlife crime. Fisheries and tourism, key economic sectors for the central region, were plunged into a serious crisis.

Residents surviving on fishing were rendered desperate and helpless, not knowing what to do with no fish or shrimp to catch. Tiếp tục đọc “Central region recovers after mass fish deaths”

Hanoi needs long-term solutions for garbage collection

In rural areas, garbage collection is done by self-managed units in hamlets and communes. Garbage is collected from residential quarters, gathered in certain places and then carried to the city’s concentrated treatment plants.Since there are not enough dumpers, garbage cannot be collected in the right way and the collection time is erratic. Garbage is often left in residential quarters. In most cases, garbage is only collected once every 2-3 days, or 10 days. The places where garbage are gathered are within residential quarters, but the rubbish is not covered in a hygienic way. Tiếp tục đọc “Hanoi needs long-term solutions for garbage collection”
