VietNamNet Bridge – More than 50 serious pollution cases were discovered in 2016, including the mass fish deaths in four provinces of Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Thua Thien-Hue in the central region.

Seven ministries and more than 100 Vietnamese and foreign scientists spent 84 days and nights to trace down the culprit which caused the mass fish death catastrophe. The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment (MONRE) finally gathered enough evidence to force Formosa Ha Tinh, the steel complex developer from Taiwan, to admit its behavior of discharging untreated waste water which caused mass fish deaths and serious pollution to coastal areas.

SYDNEY: Coral bleached for two consecutive years at Australia’s Great Barrier Reef has “zero prospect” of recovery, scientists warned on Monday (Apr 10), as they confirmed the site has again been hit by warming sea temperatures.

Researchers said last month they were detecting another round of mass bleaching this year after a severe event in 2016, and their fears were confirmed after aerial surveys of the entire 2,300km long bio-diverse reef.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian authorities have seized about US$3.1 million (£2.5 million) worth of rhinoceros horns flown in from Mozambique via Qatar, the latest seizure in Asia of products from endangered species to feed demand for traditional remedies, officials said on Monday.

HÀ NỘI — A year after the environmental catastrophe of mass fish deaths caused by the Hưng Nghiệp Formosa Steel Corporation, residents along the central coast are trying to return to a normal life.

Formosa’s actions polluted more than 200km of coastline in April last year, killing more than 100 tonnes of fish and devasting the environment, robbing thousands of people of their livelihoods and severely damaging the economies of Hà Tĩnh, Quảng Bình, Quảng Tri and Thừa Thiên Huế provinces.

Fisheries and tourism, key economic sectors for the central region, were plunged into a serious crisis.

VietNamNet Bridge – The garbage collection in urban areas is mechanized, while the work is still done manually in rural areas with low productivity and efficiency.

In rural areas, garbage collection is done by self-managed units in hamlets and communes. Garbage is collected from residential quarters, gathered in certain places and then carried to the city’s concentrated treatment plants.Since there are not enough dumpers, garbage cannot be collected in the right way and the collection time is erratic. Garbage is often left in residential quarters. In most cases, garbage is only collected once every 2-3 days, or 10 days.
