Businesses, residents, and even immigrants in the Central Highlands region are exploiting the local forests for its natural resources.

Sand exploitation vessels on Chu River a grave concern

THANH HOÁ — Several illegal sand exploitation vessels have been found operating along Chu River in the central province of Thanh Hoá.However, local authorised agencies are finding it difficult to deter vessels owing to inadequate and weak human resources.As a result, banks along the river have suffered serious erosion, narrowing the cultivable area of residents and threatening people’s safety.

Ducks, fish die en masse in central Vietnamese village

Countless farm-raised ducks and fish from a village in the central Vietnamese province of Quang Nam have been found dead overnight, with the cause yet to be concluded.

The deaths were discovered on Tuesday morning in a section of a stream in An Chanh Village, Dai Tan Commune, Dai Loc District.

After finding out about the mass deaths, local residents gathered at the People’s Committee headquarters in Dai Tan to report the situation.

Vietnam’s environment protection chief dismissed over Formosa disaster

A chief of environmental protection operations under Vietnam’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has been dismissed for his management oversight that had led to the Formosa disaster last year.

Luong Duy Hanh, director of the Department of Control of Environmental Protection Activities, has been removed from his position, a source close to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper said, quoting the decision of the Vietnam Environment Administration.

Results from the Central Inspection Committee showed that Hanh, during his time in office, failed to correctly monitor the activities of the Vietnamese steel subsidiary of Taiwan’s Formosa Plastics Group in the north-central province of Ha Tinh.
