Sau bài báo của tờ The New York Times về đường đi toàn cầu của bụi mịn sử dụng dữ liệu của Dịch vụ Giám sát Khí quyển Copernicus châu Âu (CAMS), Media Climate Net đã liên hệ với CAMS về các quan sát của họ đối với tình hình ô nhiễm không khí ở Việt Nam. Trả lời câu hỏi về nguồn gây ô nhiễm ở miền Bắc Việt Nam, tiến sĩ Johannes Flemming, nhà nghiên cứu chính của CAMS cho hay:
“Trả lời câu hỏi của các bạn một cách kỹ lưỡng sẽ đòi hỏi các nghiên cứu hết sức kì công. Nhưng tôi nghĩ không nghi ngờ gì, khu vực xung quanh Hà Nội là một nguồn ô nhiễm không khí đáng kể và các chất ô nhiễm di chuyển tầm xa cũng góp phần gây ô nhiễm không khí ở Việt Nam.”
Dịch vụ Giám sát Khí quyển Copernicus đã tiến hành quan sát ô nhiễm không khí trên toàn cầu từ vệ tinh và dự báo chất lượng không khí toàn cầu kể từ 2003. As Vietnam’s big cities have been engulfed in toxic air for months, some Vietnamese people have turned to a novel solution – buying hits of purified oxygen to escape the pollution.
According to data by AirVisual, an independent online air quality index monitor, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam’s two largest cities, are frequently listed among the world’s worst 20 metropolises in terms of air quality. World ranking’s not the point, worsening air pollution is a fact, so deal with it instead of offering excuses and explanations, Hanoians say.
When Vietnam’s capital city was, albeit momentarily, declared the most polluted one in the world Friday morning, officials scrambled to explain that it was a seasonal transition and a periodical episode.
The low quality of Hanoi’s air in the past days has happened because the city is in the transition from summer to fall and then winter. Therefore this is just a “periodical phenomenon” that happens every year, said officials of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment.
On Friday morning, Hanoi took the top spot for the city with worst air quality in the world in a ranking of more than 10,000 cities worldwide, when its air quality index (AQI) stood at 175. The previous evening, the index was over 200. An AQI level above 100 is considered polluted or unhealthy for humans.
The city’s level of PM2.5 or super fine particles, a fraction of the width of a human hair released from vehicles, industry and natural sources like dust, was 102.2 microgram per cubic meters (μg/m3) of air by Friday morning. The World Health Organization Air Quality Guideline recommends an annual mean exposure threshold of 10 μg/m3 to minimize health risks. Vietnam’s national PM2.5 threshold is 25 μg/m3.

Ta Ngoc Son, deputy head of general planning office at the Hanoi Environmental Protection Agency, said IQAir AirVisual has come up with the ranking based on data measured at the monitoring station at the U.S. embassy and that cannot tell the condition of the entire city.
“The station at the embassy stands at the intersection of Lang Ha and De La Thanh streets, a major traffic point which is surrounded by many construction projects of large scale and that’s why the air condition there would be worse than in other places.

An annual Buddhist festival held earlier this month in the northern Vietnamese city of Hai Phong has attracted environmental criticism as it purportedly involved people setting as many as 30,000 plastic lanterns afloat on a local bay.
On the night of August 10, hundreds of people gathered in Cat Ba Town on Cat Hai Island, a district administered by Hai Phong, to observe Vu Lan Occasion, a festival Buddhist followers hold annually to pay homage to their parents and ancestors.

Một ngày mang đến một thông báo có phần gây chấn động cho thế giới của các nhà máy điện gây ô nhiễm.
Tóm lược: Công ty trí tuệ nhân tạo phi lợi nhuận có tên là WattTime sẽ sử dụng hình ảnh vệ tinh để theo dõi chính xác ô nhiễm không khí (bao gồm cả lượng khí thải carbon) phát ra từ mọi nhà máy điện trên thế giới, trong thời gian thực. Và họ sẽ công khai những dữ liệu đó.
Đây là một thay đổi rất lớn. Yếu kém trong giám sát và theo dõi dữ liệu khí thải đã gây khó khăn cho việc thực thi các biện pháp hạn chế ô nhiễm đối với các nhà máy điện. Hệ thống này hứa hẹn sẽ loại bỏ yếu kém về giám sát và theo dõi dữ liệu khí thải.
Và sẽ không chỉ nhà quản lý và chính trị gia xem được dữ liệu này; công chúng cũng sẽ xem được. Khi nói đến thực thi môi trường, công chúng có thể đáng sợ và là sự trừng phạt mạnh hơn bất kỳ cơ quan quản lý nào. Nếu tất cả nhóm công dân trên thế giới đều có thể lên mạng và tìm ra danh sách các nhà máy điện gây ô nhiễm nhất trong khu vực của họ, thì việc này sẽ loại bỏ một trong những rào cản thông tin lớn đối với hành động của công dân.
Và công dân có lý do để hành động. Theo báo cáo mới nhất về tình trạng không khí toàn cầu, ô nhiễm không khí là nguy cơ gây tử vong lớn thứ năm trên toàn cầu. Nó gây ra 5 triệu cái chết sớm và làm mất 147 triệu năm cho cuộc sống lành mạnh; hàng năm, các quốc gia xây dựng nhiều nhà máy điện nhất đang gặp phải tình trạng ô nhiễm không khí nhiều nhất. Công dân của họ phải hứng chịu hậu quả nặng nề nhất. Và bây giờ họ sẽ được trang bị thông tin về các nhà máy gây nguy hiểm cho họ.

TTO – Rác xử lý không cẩn thận làm cả bãi rác đổ ập xuống vườn hoa màu khiến dân bức xúc. Càng bức xúc hơn khi vụ việc xảy ra đã 1 tuần nhưng không được xử lý.
Gần như toàn bộ núi rác nghìn tấn đổ xuống vườn dân ở thung lũng
Bằng thiết bị ghi hình từ trên cao, phóng viên Tuổi Trẻ Online ghi nhận không phải một phần bãi tập trung rác của TP Đà Lạt (bãi rác Cam Ly, P.5, Đà Lạt) mà gần như toàn bộ khu tập trung rác đổ xuống vườn dân.
Núi rác sạt một đường dài từ đỉnh xuống thung lũng, nơi có vườn hoa của dân trông như suối rác.
Ghi nhận mỗi ngày có khoảng 200 tấn rác đổ về bãi rác Cam Ly. Như vậy lượng rác đổ xuống vườn dân lên đến hàng ngàn tấn rác.

Villages get rich but suffer environmental consequences

HÀ NỘI — Villages across the country have benefited from the country’s economic development, however, many do not have measures in place to deal with environmental protection.
The village of Trát Cầu in Hà Nội, which produces blankets, bed sheets and pillows, is a typical example.
Nguyễn Quang Thà, chairman of the Trát Cầu Traditional Villages Association, told Tiền Phong (Vanguard) newspaper that over the past 20 years, more and more foreign enterprises have invested in the village.
Now about 30 enterprises from Japan and South Korea are working there.
