Pity the poor propagandist! Back in the 20th century it was a lot easier to control an authoritarian country’s hearts and minds. All domestic media could be directed out of a government office. Foreign media could be jammed. Borders were sealed, and your population couldn’t witness the successes of a rival system. You had a clear narrative with at least a theoretically enticing vision of social justice or national superiority, one strong enough to fend off the seductions of liberal democracy and capitalism. Civil society activist beaten by plainclothes police officers; prominent blogger released.
Civil society activist Pham Thanh Nghien was beaten by plainclothes police officers on June 2 in front of her home outside Hanoi. Blogger Nguyen Ngoc Nhu Quynh, who was traveling to Nghien’s home with two other bloggers for a meeting, said that plainclothes police officers beat Nghien in order to force Quynh and the other bloggers to leave, according to Radio Free Asia. Separately, authorities on May 26 released well-known blogger Truong Duy Nhat, who was sentenced to two years in jail for “abusing democratic freedoms.”

Authorities on May 18 briefly detained prominent blogger Dung Mai at the Hanoi airport after he returned from a workshop on citizen journalism in Singapore, according to a Radio Free Asia report. Meanwhile, plainclothes police officers on May 19 assaulted outspoken anti-China activist Nguyen Chi Tuyen in Hanoi during a weeklong U.S.-Vietnam human rights dialogue. The government has not made new arrests of bloggers since January but continues to intimidate individuals with dissenting opinions.
