Southeast Asia’s longest lava cave system of in Vietnam’s Central Highlands will open to tourists next year in form of a geological park, local authorities said.

A source from Dak Nong Province government said its tourism agencies are initiating a project to set up the geopark along the Serepok River in Krong No District.

Scientists from Vietnam’s General Department of Geology and Mineral Resources and members of the Japanese Caving Association discovered the rare system late last year after seven years of research.

The system stretches about 25 kilometers through 12 tube-shape caves

A Ho Chi Minh City-based travel firm started offering tours to two of the caves last April.

Experts said it is the most beautiful in the region and a unique vestige of a formative volcanic eruption that took place millions of years ago.

The discovery of lava molds of trees in the system suggested that the area was forest which was wiped away by a volcano eruption.

Vietnam boasts many diversified cave systems dotted throughout the country–from the northwest to the central region, including the Phong Nha-Ke Bang in Quang Binh Province which is home to the world’s largest cave Son Doong.
