CSIS – The general-secretary of the Vietnamese Communist Party Nguyen Phu Trong on July 7 will meet with President Barack Obama as the two leaders strive to establish strategic trust, the requisite foundation for the relationship to move to the next level. The visit is unprecedented in the history of U.S.-Vietnam relations. Unlike his Chinese counterpart, who is both communist party chief and president, Trong does not hold an official position within the government. AMTI – In 2002, ASEAN and China signed the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC) that promised to “enhance favourable conditions for a peaceful and durable solution of differences and disputes among countries concerned.” Unfortunately, thirteen years on, the claimant countries are no closer to a solution for any of the disputes, while coercive and other unilateral acts are steadily accumulating into serious tensions. What is needed now is a Code of Conduct (COC) that not only overcomes the DOC’s weaknesses but also addresses the new challenges that have arisen since 2002. Cleantechnica– Global interest in Japan’s renewable energy sector, specifically the solar power market, continues to strengthen with a major developer from Thailand looking to boost its footprint in the land of the rising sun.
Thai Solar Energy has announced that it will set up 300 MW worth of solar power capacity in Japan over the next 3 years. The company will start with the implementation of a 25 MW solar power plant, then expand the installed capacity to 100 MW by the end of 2016, which will eventually be increased to 300 MW.
Thai Solar Energy claims to be “the first company in Southeast Asia to have effectively applied solar energy commercially.” The company is moving into Japan as the government policies support development of renewable energy projects and a large number of solar power projects are already under construction. The National Interest – Cooperation between Japan, the United States, and Vietnam has been improving dramatically over the last several years—a reflection of both the changing strategic environment in the region, as well as a deepening sense of trust among the three countries.
Recent events—especially when one examines specific instances of warming bilateral ties with Vietnam—demonstrate how far relations have come. For example, during U.S. secretary of defense Ashton Carter’s recent visit to Vietnam from May 31 to June 1, 2015, he and his Vietnamese counterpart, Gen. Phung Quang Thanh, signed a Joint Vision Statement on Defense Relations—a remarkable development in the defense ties between the two nations, as relations were only normalized just twenty years ago.
