Indonesia has proposed the setting up of a new trade bloc that could counterbalance the dominance of the United States and China.

The US dominated the APEC forum in Lima, Peru, last week with its lucrative Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), championed by outgoing US President Barack Obama, which comprises 12 of the 21 APEC members, including Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam. Các cường quốc khu vực đang thúc đẩy các kế hoạch tham vọng về xây dựng các tuyến đường bộ, đường tàu, đường ống dẫn và các cơ sở hạ tầng cứng khác trên khắp khu vực. Asian Views on America’s Role in Asia: The Future of the Rebalance

The 2016 election campaign has revealed mounting concern and skepticism about American foreign policy commitments towards Asia, including signals towards anti-globalization and isolationism. Concerns have been raised about free trade and investment, the rise of China, territorial disputes, nuclear proliferation, and America’s presence in Afghanistan. The United States must not shrink from its leadership role in the international order and skillfully navigate a complex set of issues in Asia, according to a forthcoming policy report, Asian Views on America’s Role in Asia. This report presents policy recommendations for the incoming administration on issues most important to three sub-regions of Northeast Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. The recommendations culminate a series of closed-door, high-level working group meetings held in Seoul, Bangkok, Colombo, and New York from April to June of 2016.

LIMA, Peru — A toxic political war over money, jobs and globalization killed the vast and complex trade deal that was supposed to be a signature legacy of President Obama. But the deal, between the United States and 11 Asian and Pacific nations, was never just about trade.

Pacific Rim leaders vowed on Sunday to fight protectionism and Chinese officials said more countries are looking to join a China-led trading bloc after Donald Trump’s election victory raised fears the United States would scrap free trade deals.

Since the early 2000s, countries in South-east Asia have seen a plethora of trade pacts.

Singapore signed a bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with New Zealand in 2000. Soon, others like Malaysia and Thailand got in on the act.

Who are the future consumers of South-East Asia?

Weforum_As business leaders convene for the Kuala Lumpur meeting of the World Economic Forum, they have many uncertainties to ponder, from the trajectory of China’s economy to whether the new ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) launched at the start of the year will vault South-East Asia up to a new level of economic dynamism.

Demographics and the granularity of growth needs to be part of their thinking. The question today is not so much where to find entire growth markets, but which specific demographic groups have the most potential?

Radical demographic shifts are transforming consumer markets around the world. In the past, market growth was fuelled largely by expanding populations; today, incomes are the force to reckon with.
