World’s most salt-resistant rice discovered

World’s most salt-resistant rice discovered

| India Times, TNN | Apr 17, 2013, 04.34 PM IST

LONDON: A scientific breakthrough will bring a loud cheer among India’s farmers living in coastal areas.

Scientists have discovered a rice variety with double the salt tolerance of any other rice in the world.

Farmers lose their livelihoods when seawater encroaches on their farms in coastal areas, rendering them too salty to grow rice.

Scientists at International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) have crossed two different species of rice to produce new rice that has double the salt tolerance of existing rice varieties.

In another four years, this new type of rice with high tolerance of salinity may become available to Indian farmers. Tiếp tục đọc “World’s most salt-resistant rice discovered”

BBC crew attacked in China and forced to sign confession

Journalist says crew trying to interview villager about land reform had cameras smashed and confiscated

A BBC camera crew reporting in China was attacked and later forced by police to apologise and sign a confession for trying to conduct an “illegal interview”, one of its reporters has said.

John Sudworth, a journalist with the BBC, and his team were attempting to interview a villager in rural China who claims her father was killed during a land dispute with the government. As they walked towards her house, a group of men blocked their way, pushed Sudworth and smashed and snatched the crew’s cameras. ISIL fighters from China’s Uighur ethnic minority have vowed to return home and “shed blood like rivers” in what security experts said marked the first such threat against Chinese targets.

The threat came in a half-hour video released Monday by a division of Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) featuring fighters from China’s Uighur minority, said the US-based SITE Intelligence Group, which analysed the footage.

China has for years blamed exiled Uighur “separatists” for a series of violent attacks in its western Xinjiang region – the Muslim Uighur homeland – and warned of the potential for them to link up with violent groups.

In the video, a Uighur fighter issued the threat against China just before executing an alleged informant.

“Oh, you Chinese who do not understand what people say. We are the soldiers of the Caliphate, and we will come to you to clarify to you with the tongues of our weapons, to shed blood like rivers and avenging the oppressed,” according to SITE’s translation.

The footage also showed fighters, including heavily armed children, giving speeches, praying, and killing other “informants”. Tiếp tục đọc “ISIL video threatens China with ‘rivers of bloodshed’”

China drills again near Taiwan as island warns of threat

BEIJING/TAIPEI: Chinese jets and warships carried out exercises near Taiwan and into the Western Pacific on Thursday, as the self-ruled island’s defence minister warned of a growing threat from its giant neighbour.

Democratic Taiwan is increasingly concerned over China’s military designs, especially recent rounds of Chinese drills near Taiwan. Beijing has never renounced the use of force to take control of what it deems a wayward province. Tiếp tục đọc “China drills again near Taiwan as island warns of threat”

Don’t Believe the New Trump

Don’t Believe the New Trump

Donald Trump’s address to Congress on Tuesday night was the first truly presidential speech he has ever given and therefore the best — far superior to his egomaniacal “I alone can fix it” Republican National Convention acceptance speech or his dark and divisive “American carnage” inaugural address. His tribute to fallen Navy SEAL William “Ryan” Owens, delivered while his widow sobbed in the balcony, was a genuinely moving moment, even if earlier in the day he refused to accept any personal responsibility for ordering the raid in which Owens died. For once he did not vilify the media or his opponents. Tiếp tục đọc “Don’t Believe the New Trump”

Vietnam is among five countries in the world to suffer the most from climate change.

According to the Central Steering Committee on Fighting and Preventing Calamities, the spell of cold weather which lasted from January 22 to January 28, 2016 in the north killed nearly 9,500 cattle and damaged 9,453 hectares of rice fields.

During the cold spell, snow not only appeared in mountainous areas near the border line, but also in Hanoi and Nghe An province, the thing which never happened in the past. Tiếp tục đọc “Climate change triggers new diseases in Vietnam”

Workers in VN paid half of salaries in China at Japanese factories

Last update 14:00 | 01/03/2017
VietNamNet Bridge – The salary Vietnamese receive at Japanese businesses is half of what workers in China can expect. The key lies in productivity and the shift of production to higher stages of the value chain.

A recent survey by JETRO (Japan External Trade Organization) showed Vietnamese workers received $4,025 on average per year in 2016, though they worked for leading Japanese companies.

The amount of money was less than 50 percent of the salary that Japanese companies paid to Chinese workers who work for factories in China.

JETRO’s Chief Representative Atsusuke Kawada said the pay to Vietnamese shows that Vietnam remains a market with cheap labor costs in comparison with other countries. This is a great advantage for Vietnam to attract Japanese investors. Tiếp tục đọc “Workers in VN paid half of salaries in China at Japanese factories”
